BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Medaille College women's lacrosse team earned a major conference victory over Wells College on Saturday evening. The Mavericks' offense overwhelmed the Express winning the game 19-1.
The Mavericks wasted no time getting on the scoreboard.
Cameron Briggs (West Seneca, NY, West Seneca East) grabbed the early draw control and
Sara Geiser (West Seneca, NY, Mount Mercy Academy) set up
Katelynn Deveans (Clinton, NY, Clinton) for the first goal of the game. Goalie
Tatiana Wright (Stratford, CT, Bunnell) made three saves early in the game including two back-to-back. Deveans would pick up another goal unassisted. The Express scored their goal at 6:45 off of a free position shot.
Erin Hardick (Buffalo, NY, Sacred Heart) would score the third goal of the game for Medaille taking the ball in on her own.
Kara Anderson (Mississauga, ON, Lorne Park Secondary) would add a goal a minute later off of another draw control from Briggs. Geiser connected with Deveans with 12 seconds to play to give Medaille a 5-1 lead at the end of the first.
Shyanne Trinh (Dorchester, MA, Stoughton) scored early in the second quarter with Geiser adding another shortly after. The Maverick offense was rolling in the second quarter scoring six more goals. Briggs grabbed three, with Anderson, Geiser, and Deveans each adding one. Hardick picked up an assist and Geiser also added an assist in route to a 13-1 Medaille lead.
The third quarter saw no scoring from either team until nine minutes in. Geiser and Deveans connected on another one of their plays for the Mavericks' 14
th goal. Hardick stormed up the field and scored her second goal of the game. A ground ball by
Emma Grimm (Watertown, N.Y., Watertown) led to another goal from Briggs to put the Mavs up 16-1 going into the final quarter.
The Mavericks had all the momentum in the fourth quarter. Anderson scored five minutes into the quarter and Geiser added her third goal of the game with 5:33 left to play. The Mavericks did well in the draw control which led to extra scoring opportunities. As the quarter was ending, Briggs added one more goal off of a free position shot. The Mavericks ended the game with a 19-1 conference win.
Deveans led the Mavs with five goals and an assist with five ground balls and one caused turnover. Briggs also finished with five goals, five ground balls, and one caused turnover. Geiser picked up three goals and four assists with three ground balls and two caused turnovers. Anderson had three goals, four ground balls, and one caused turnover. Hardick picked up two goals and an assist while Trinh picked up a goal and two caused turnovers.
The Mavericks will return to play at home on Wednesday, April 13 against SUNY Poly. The game is set to start at 5:00 P.M.
