Maverick Offense Shines in Win Over Wildcats

Medaille Beats SUNY Poly 19-2

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Medaille College women's lacrosse team returned to action Wednesday evening for a non-conference matchup against the SUNY Poly Wildcats. The Maverick offense dominated in all four quarters of the game winning 19-2.

Cameron Briggs (West Seneca, NY, West Seneca East) got the Mavs rolling 30 seconds into the game scoring the first goal assisted by Sara Geiser (West Seneca, NY, Mount Mercy Academy). The Wildcats would respond with a goal but Medaille answered back scoring three more to take a 4-1 lead at the end of the first. Geiser scored one assisted by Erin Hardick (Buffalo, NY, Sacred Heart), scored another by herself, and assisted Kara Anderson (Mississauga, ON, Lorne Park Secondary) in her first goal of the game.

The scoring frenzy started right back up in the second quarter. The Mavericks scored five goals in less than five minutes to extend their lead to 11-1. Geiser would grab another solo goal and assisted on goals from Anderson and Katelynn Deveans (Clinton, NY, Clinton). Briggs and Irelyne Tarbell (Akwesasne, NY, Salmon River) had a connection that was unstoppable. Briggs scored four goals all assisted by Tarbell who set the play up. Tarbell went on to assist Anderson in another goal and Deveans picked up two more goals, one shorthanded assisted by Geiser.

The Mavs started the third quarter leading 14-1. Anderson added a goal from a free position shot before the Wildcats scored their second goal of the day. The Wildcats looked to put more shots on net which goalie Tatiana Wright (Stratford, CT, Bunnell) was ready for. Deveans scored from a free position shot and proceeded to score another goal unassisted with 1:29 left in the third quarter.

Deveans and Geiser linked up for the 18th Maverick goal early in the fourth quarter. Medaille played well on defense forcing multiple turnovers and preventing the Wildcats from being able to clear the zone. Briggs went on to add one more goal from a free position shot to secure a 19-2 victory.

Briggs led the Mavericks with six goals and five ground balls with one caused turnover. Deveans also finished with six goals with one ground ball and one caused turnover. In total points, Geiser led the team with nine as she had three goals and six assists. Geiser also recorded six ground balls and one caused turnover.

Anderson finished with four goals, three groundballs, and one caused turnover while Tarbell grabbed five assists and one ground ball. Deveans and Briggs both had seven draw controls and Hardick added an assist. Wright finished with the win in net and made four saves.

The Mavs will have a small break before returning to play at home on Tuesday, April 19 against Alfred University. The game will start at 5:00 P.M.
