Saints Overtake Mavericks in Non-Conference Game

Women's Lacrosse Falls to D'Youville 4-18

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Medaille College women's lacrosse team squared off with NCAA DII opponent D'Youville College Wednesday evening at the Medaille Sports Complex. The Mavericks were defeated 4-18 to the Saints.

The Mavs won the opening draw control but D'Youville's defense held strong forcing the Mavs into a shot clock violation. The Saints took the opening shot on goal, but Tatiana Wright (Stratford, CT, Bunnell) came up with the save. The Saints capitalized on a Maverick turnover and scored their first goal from a free position shot. The Saints would add another goal two minutes later to lead 2-0. Erin Hardick (Buffalo, NY, Sacred Heart) forced a turnover that immediately led to a Medaille goal from Katelynn Deveans (Clinton, NY, Clinton) assisted by Sara Geiser (West Seneca, NY, Mount Mercy Academy). The Saints picked up two more goals to lead 4-1 at the end of the first quarter.

The Saints took over in the second quarter scoring eight goals. Wright made three saves in the quarter and Briggs forced a turnover late in the quarter. The Saints offense found their rhythm and took advantage of early draw controls to boost their scoring opportunities.

The Mavericks charged back in the third quarter by matching the goal output from D'Youville. Both teams scored three goals with Medaille earning theirs all in a row early in the quarter. Kara Anderson (Mississauga, ON, Lorne Park Secondary) took one in all by herself in the first minute. Geiser assisted Briggs on her first goal of the game until Briggs scored her second only a minute later.

D'Youville shut down Medaille in the fourth quarter by adding three more goals. Wright would pick up another three saves in the quarter, but the Saints out-shot Medaille 34-11 in the game leading to the increased scoring opportunities.

Briggs led the Mavericks with two goals, three ground balls, and three caused turnovers. Anderson recorded one goal and two ground balls followed by Deveans with one goal and one ground ball. Geiser picked up two assists and Wright finished with eight saves.

The Mavs will return to play at home on Saturday, April 9. Medaille will take on Wells College for a conference match starting at 2:00 P.M.
