Fourth Quarter Offense Shines in Loss to SUNY Canton

Women's Lacrosse Loses Their Second Game of the Weekend

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Medaille College women's lacrosse team finished out their weekend with a loss to the SUNY Canton Kangaroos. The Mavericks lost 17-11.

The action started with a Roos free position. They capitalized and put the first points on the board of the game. Just over two minutes later, they struck again. The Roos had a good clear attempt, and passed it around to finish with goal number two. They went on to score five more unanswered goals in the first quarter. Katelynn Deveans (Clinton, NY, Clinton) broke that streak at 5:19. She capitalized off of a Roos turnover. After a good Maverick clear attempt, Irelyne Tarbell (Akwesasne, NY, Salmon River) found the back of the net with 28 seconds left in the first. She was assisted by Cameron Briggs (West Seneca, NY, West Seneca East). The Mavs had a tough road ahead of them going into the second quarter trailing 2-7.

The Maverick offense started up early in the second. Briggs took the first shot but it hit the post. At 12:31, the Roos took a free position shot, but goalie Tatiana Wright (Stratford, CT, Bunnell) stuffed her. The Mavs turned the ball over at twelve minutes and the Roos capitalized, scoring their first of the quarter. They scored another quick goal after a missed shot to make it 9-2. At 8:17 the Roos fouled Briggs and gave her a free position attempt. She finished it off with the Mavs' third goal of the game. Just under two minutes later, Deveans got a shot at free position. She was too dangerous, and scored her second of the game. The Mavs were starting to heat up. With another free position attempt, Tarbell scored her second of the game. The Mavs were inching closer at 5-9. At 4:55, the Roos answered back with a goal off of a Maverick turnover. Minutes later, Sara Geiser (West Seneca, NY, Mount Mercy Academy) netted another free position goal. This was their fourth free position goal of the game. The Roos added two more goals to the board before ending the half. The Mavs went into halftime down 6-12.

The second half started with a goalie change for the Roos. The Mavs would win the draw, but after a turnover and good clear, the Roos scored the first goal of the third quarter. Not even a full minute later, the Roos scored after a Maverick foul. This was not the start the Mavs were looking for in the second half. The action slowed down until 4:59, when the Roos scored another one. It was 15-6. Deveans was not willing to let their deficit get to ten, and she got herself a hat trick. Geiser gave her the ball from behind the net for the assist. That exciting goal would finish it for the third, and the Mavs were still down 7-15.

The momentum stayed with the Mavericks at the start of the fourth quarter. Deveans was fouled and given a free position attempt at 14:19. She capitalized and scored her fourth of the game. Less than one minute later, she did it again! Deveans scored her fifth of the day. At 10:24, Briggs ripped a shot high, but Tarbell was right there to scoop up the ground ball. She would send it over to Briggs again, and this time it went in. They were within five. The Roos ended the scoring streak for the Mavs at 8:16 with their sixteenth goal on a man-up opportunity. At 17:01, the Roos scored their final goal of the game after a good clear attempt. The final goal of the game came from Geiser on another free position attempt. The Mavs had a great comeback, but it was not enough. The Roos took the game 17-11.

Game leaders for the Mavericks were Deveans with five goals, three ground balls, one caused turnover, and six draw controls, Briggs with two goals, one assist, three ground balls, two caused turnovers, and eight draw controls, and Wright with 13 saves. She is credited with the loss.

The Mavericks will travel to Keuka College next. They will play on Saturday, March 12 with a 1:00 p.m. start.
