KEUKA PARK, N.Y. – The Medaille College women's lacrosse team returned to action today with a key win over Keuka College. The Mavs beat the Wolves on the road 11-9 for their first win on the season.
The Mavericks came out aggressive to start the first quarter as a ground ball by
Cameron Briggs (West Seneca, NY, West Seneca East) led to a goal by
Sara Geiser (West Seneca, NY, Mount Mercy Academy). The Wolves responded quickly as they scored 30 seconds later. Keuka capitalized on a Medaille turnover to score again and take the lead. The Mavs continued to put the pressure on as Briggs found the back of the net on a free position shot with 14 seconds on the clock.
The score did not stay tied for long as Keuka scored early in the second quarter. Geiser and Briggs continued to be a force for the Mavs as they each scored again. Keuka would go on to tie the score at four after winning the draw following the Medaille goal. Briggs would give the Mavs the lead back as she forced a turnover, picked up the ground ball, and scored.
The Mavs would go on a scoring frenzy in the third quarter with Briggs grabbing another goal, assisted by
Irelyne Tarbell (Akwesasne, NY, Salmon River). Keuka would go on to score next, but the remainder of the quarter belonged to the Mavs.
Katelynn Deveans (Clinton, NY, Clinton) scored twice to extend the Maverick lead as Tarbell and Briggs also beat the Keuka goaltender.
Medaille led 10-5 going into the fourth quarter, but Keuka was not out of the game. The Wolves forced a few turnovers and managed to score four times in the quarter. Deveans' goal helped keep the Mavs out front as they took the match 11-9.
