BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Medaille College women's lacrosse team returned to the Medaille Sports Complex for their game against Westminister College. The Mavs exploded on offense with a 17-4 win and move to 2-3 on the season.
The Mavs started fast out of the gate after winning the draw. Katelynn Deveans (Clinton, NY, Clinton) scored with less than two minutes into the game for the first Maverick goal. The Titans fired back but Tatiana Wright (Stratford, CT, Bunnell) made a big save. Kara Anderson (Mississauga, ON, Lorne Park Secondary) took the ball up the field and scored to put the Mavs up by two. The Mavs did well defensively forcing the Titans into a shot clock violation that eventually led to a goal from Sara Geiser (West Seneca, NY, Mount Mercy Academy). Five minutes later, Geiser connected with Deveans who scored to put the Mavs up 4-0. The Titans grabbed a goal late in the first quarter but the Mavs still were strong defensively.
The Mavs continued to play aggressive on offense with Anderson scoring another goal from a free position shot. Natalia Wojcik (Staten Island, NY, Susan E. Wagner) took a shot that got deflected but she picked up the ground ball to retain possession. This led to another goal by Deveans with 6:56 left in the second. 30 seconds later, Erin Hardick (Buffalo, NY, Sacred Heart) scored her first goal of the season from a great one-timer pass from Geiser. Wright was strong in net as the Titans could not score until three minutes left to play in the second. Briggs responded a minute later with Geiser again setting up the goal. Just as the clock was about to expire, Anderson hustled down the field and scored to put Medaille up 9-2.
The momentum continued for Medaille as Anderson scored with 12 seconds into the third. A foul from the Titans gave Anderson another free position shot which she capitalized on. With 6:37 to play, the Mavs took a timeout to set up a play. Their strategy paid off as Anderson scored from a quick pass by Irelyne Tarbell (Akwesasne, NY, Salmon River). A Medaille foul led to a goal for the Titans, but the Mavs led 12-3 going into the fourth.
Deveans and Geiser continued their connection as Deveans fired a shot to the back of the net. Geiser would go on to score two more times and Briggs would add another in the span of three minutes. With Medaille leading 16-3, the Titans would score with five minutes left in the game. Geiser responded soon after and the Mavs finished with a 17-4 win.
Anderson led the Mavericks with six goals, 12 ground balls, and caused three turnovers. Geiser also had a strong day with four goals, five assists, and three ground balls. Deveans also recorded four goals and an assist while Briggs added two goals and five ground balls. Hardick had one goal and six ground balls while Wright recorded 10 saves in the win.
The Mavs will travel to Thiel College on Saturday, March 19 for their 1:00 P.M. game.
