Women's Lacrosse Downed in Home Opener

Mavs Take Tough Loss to Grove City

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Medaille College women's lacrosse team lost their home opener today against the Grove City Wolverines. The Mavericks went down 15-7.

The Mavs were the first to strike on their field this season. Kara Anderson (Mississauga, ON, Lorne Park Secondary) netted the goal off of a free position shot at 12:56. The Maverick offense kept the pressure on early in the first quarter taking multiple shots. At 10:37, the Wolverines put their first goal on the board. They struck again thirty seconds later right from the draw, to gain the lead. The time ticked down with multiple turnovers from both teams. At 6:34, the Wolverines were given a free position attempt, and finished it with a goal. That finished out the action of the first quarter. The Wolverines lead 3-1.

It was a draw control for the Wolverines to start off the second quarter. They took it down the field, but Cameron Briggs (West Seneca, NY, West Seneca East) caused a turnover to get the ball for the Mavs. It was more turnovers for both teams from there. At 9:33, the Wolverines picked up a ground ball in Maverick territory and took the ball in to score their fourth goal of the game. The Mavericks were ready to answer back. On a second-chance shot, Katelynn Deveans (Clinton, NY, Clinton) netted her first of the game scooping up a ground ball after a shot from Anderson. After a Wolverine foul, Deveans drove to the net to score her second of the game with 1:12 remaining in the half. The Mavs went into halftime down 4-3.

Anderson won the draw at the start of the third quarter. It wouldn't last long, and the Wolverines took the ball back. There were a few more turnovers until a Wolverine ground ball at 13:09. This led to the fifth Wolverine goal of the game. The Wolverines won the next draw and took it straight to the net. They scored their sixth goal only 18 seconds later. After the next draw, the Mavs were given a yellow card, and that turned into another point for the Wolverines. The score was starting to slip away from the Mavs. Deveans won the next draw and went in for the shot, but it went wide. She took another shot at 8:23, but it was saved. The Wolverines clear attempt was good, and they finished with the ball in the back of the net again, this time man-up. The Wolverines would score four more before the end of the third quarter. The Mavs were down 12-3.

The Maverick offense picked back up in the final quarter. The Wolverines won the opening draw, but Briggs caused a turnover. They brought it into Wolverine territory, and Anderson netted her second of the game. Irelyne Tarbell (Akwesasne, NY, Salmon River) was the assist. The Wolverines answered back with three more goals. At 6:01, Deveans put them back within 10. Just over one minute later, Sara Geiser (West Seneca, NY, Mount Mercy Academy) scored her first of the game after a Briggs draw control. Geiser came back again, this time with an assist from Tarbell with 12 seconds left. This would do it, and the Wolverines came out on top, 15-7.

Game leaders for the Mavericks were Deveans with three goals, one assist, four ground balls and two caused turnovers, Geiser with two goals, one assist, one ground ball, and one caused turnover, and goalie Tatiana Wright (Stratford, CT, Bunnell) with 14 saves. She was credited with the loss.

The Mavs are right back at it on Sunday, March 6. They will host SUNY Canton at 1:00 p.m.
