Mavs Get Redemption Over Alfred State

Men's Basketball Continues Conference Win-Streak

ALFRED, N.Y. – The Medaille College men's basketball team won their fourth conference match-up in a row against the Alfred State Pioneers. The Mavericks won 94-79.

The last time the Mavs and the Pioneers faced off the Mavs were down some key players and their coach. The Pioneers came out on top, so the Mavericks were looking for revenge coming into this game. The Mavs started things off with a Jorarei Bile (Oxon Hill, MD, Oxon Hill) layup after a steal. The Pioneers would answer back with five points in a row to take the lead. The Mavs were coming from behind early on. At just over 17 minutes left in the half, the Pioneers had a six-point lead. Bile started the ascent back to a lead. At 16:25 Kendall McGill (Largo, MD, Largo) hit a three, but then fouled. The Pioneers made both free-throws. Jaqwan Washington (Bryan, TX, Bryan) made two free-throws, then Rodney Graves (Woodbridge, VA, Colgan) made a layup in the paint at 15:17. The Mavs found their lead again. Daunte Wilcott (Erie, PA, Mercyhurst Prep) added another layup for good measure, and they lead by three points. It wouldn't last very long. At 11:28, the Pioneers made a layup and took the lead back, and extended it with two made free-throws. At 10:16, Washington made a game-tying layup to make the score 19-19, but the Pioneers sunk a three, and the Mavs were playing from behind again. At 5:59 the Pioneers grabbed and steal and made it a show, ending in a dunk. They had a seven-point lead. It began to climb. The Mavs couldn't get their lead back before the half, and ended it trailing 43-51.

Redemption was still on the Mavericks' mind once the second half started. Bile once again started the scoring off for the Mavs with a layup in the paint. It was still going to be a challenge to find the lead again. The Pioneers scored four more points right after. Washington scored back-to-back layups, and Graves made his own to put the score within eight. Six different Mavs made baskets, and with a layup from Washington, went up 64-63 at 9:07 left. It was an incredible effort by the whole team. At 6:51, Graves makes another layup, and now it's the Mavs' turn to pull ahead. They would keep the momentum going in their favor for the rest of the game. The Mavs ended it, getting that redemption, winning 94-79.

Game leaders for the Mavericks were Bile with 17 points going 7-8 with three rebounds, two steals, and one block, Graves with 16 points going 7-12 with six rebounds, and three assists, and Washington with 14 points going 5-6 with four rebounds, one assist, and two steals.

The Mavericks will look to finish out their season on a five-game win streak in their final game of the season on Saturday, February 19. They will travel to La Roche for a tip-off of 4:00 p.m.
