Mavs Men's Basketball Gets First Win of the Season

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Medaille College men's basketball team grabbed their first win of the season today at the Mike Daley Memorial Tournament. They played the Cazenovia College Wildcats in a consolation game and won 88-77.

The game was started on an early foul where Rodney Graves (Woodbridge, VA, Colgan) made both free throws, putting the Mavericks on the board first. The Wildcats were right behind them and went on a seven-point scoring streak to get ahead of the Mavs. Seven minutes into the half, Dante Moultrie (Buffalo, NY, North Tonawanda) tied up the score on a layup, and Zion Tyson (Forestville, MD, Oxon Hill) hit a jump shot that would put them back in the lead. The Wildcats were determined to stay in it, and got a small lead again 11 minutes in, but Graves sunk a jump shot to keep them in the lead until just under five minutes left. The Mavericks headed into halftime trailing 30-36.

The Mavericks were determined to get their first win of the season, so they came out hot after the half. It started with a layup made by the Wildcats, then the Mavericks went on a scoring run to get them within one point. The Wildcats were still putting up points. With 10:30 left on the clock, the Mavs went into their biggest scoring run of the game that would put them in the lead. Graves made a layup in the paint to put them down by only five points. They gained a three-point lead at the end of the run. They would hang onto the lead, and win the game 88-77.

The Mavs shot 29-63 in the field, and made 22 of 28 free throws.

Game leaders for the Mavericks were Graves who had an incredible game going 12-19 in the field, and 14-16 at the line scoring an impressive 42 points. Graves also lead the team in rebounds with nine. Travis Sanders (Cleveland, OH, Euclid) was the second highest scorer for the Mavs shooting 5-12 with seven rebounds and four assists.
