Mavs Fall Short to Pioneers in Conference Match

Medaille Lose to Alfred State in Three Sets

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Medaille College women's volleyball team held their ground in a three set loss to AMCC opponent Alfred State College 20-25, 22-25, and 17-25. The Mavs fall to 4-11 on the season while Alfred State moves to 12-1.

The Pioneers jumped out to an early 7-3 lead after stringing together multiple kills to start the first set. The Mavs fought back to tie the score up at nine from a Baylee Romano (North Collins, NY, North Collins) kill. Romano followed up her kill with a solo block to give the Mavs the lead. Chelsea Prescott (Coupeville, WA, Coupeville) and Haley Kennedy (Chestermere, AB, Chestermere) joined the Medaille block party by each adding a solo block of their own. Prescott and Chase Luebeck (Troy, IL, Triad) added late kills but the Pioneer offense closed the set with three straight kills to win 25-20.

In the second set, the Mavs took advantage of the Pioneer's mistakes to go up 4-1. Halle Bogas (Cleveland, OH, Normandy) and Madison Kaczmarek (Akron, NY, Akron) continued the momentum with kills to extend the Mavs lead to 8-4. Alfred State responded in a big way with three multi-point runs to lead 17-13. Bogas added three crucial kills to get the Mavs back on track. Both teams traded multiple service errors and despite a late kill from Prescott, Medaille dropped the set 22-25.

The Mavs continued to fight in the third set with another early lead off kills from Luebeck, Kennedy, Bogas, and Kaczmarek to go up 6-3. The Pioneer offense fought back, scoring the next six points. The momentum shifted constantly with each team able to string together multiple runs. The Mavs were down 17-19 before the Pioneers went on another six-point run to finish the set with a 25-17 win.

Bogas led all hitters with eight kills and seven digs. Kaczmarek hit an impressive .667 with four kills on six swings while adding two solo blocks. Romano led all defenders with nine digs followed by Prescott with eight and Olivia Anderson (Mayville, NY, Chautauqua Lake) with seven. Prescott also had two aces while Kennedy picked up 17 assists, a block assist, and an ace. Luebeck added four kills, one ace, and a block assist in the Medaille loss.

The Mavs will head to Rochester on Saturday, October 16 to face Nazareth College at 1:00 p.m. and RIT at 3:00 p.m.
