BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Medaille College softball team got two big wins over AMCC opponent the Penn State Behrend Lions. Medaille hasn't beat them since 2018. The Mavericks took game one 4-3 in eight innings, and game two 3-2.
Game One
The Mavs got things started in the first inning.
Kylie Lyons (Olean, NY, Olean) made her way to first on a walk with one out. With two outs,
Camryn Adimey (Lakeview, NY, Frontier) hit a double to left center driving Lyons in from first. The Mavericks were on the board, 1-0.
Kaitlyn Alguire (Forestville, NY, Forestville) was pitching an excellent game. The Lions couldn't find any answers until the top of the seventh inning. It started with a runner beating a ball to
Gabrielle Presutti (Williamsville, NY, Williamsville South) at shortstop. It looked like it was going in the Mavs' favor after that as the next batter hit a hard grounder to
Brenna Fenstermaker (Le Roy, NY, Le Roy) who went for the lead runner and got her. With one out, the next batter hit to Presutti who took it herself and got the lead runner. With two outs, the Lions hit a triple to right field, and scored the runner from first. The Lions tied up the game. The Mavs couldn't make anything happen in the bottom of the inning, so they went into the eighth.
With a runner placed on second, the Lions the extra inning with a sacrifice bunt to move the runner to third. On a ground ball, there was an overthrow trying to get the girl running home, and the Lions score the go-ahead run. The next batter hit to Presutti for the out. A throwing error trying to get the runner going to third, scored the Lions second run of the inning. A ground out back to Alguire ended the half inning. The Lions had a 3-1 lead.
The Mavs needed to score three runs to win it here. Presutti was placed on second for the tie breaker. Lyons tried to get the bunt down, but fouled too many off. She ended up hitting a single to right center, and Presutti scored. The Mavs needed two more. Adimey continued her hot streak and singled to right field, moving Lyons to second.
Sarah Hapeman (Williamsville, NY, St. Mary's Lancaster) came in to run for Adimey for some quick legs. There were two outs and Fenstermaker was up to bat. She hit a shot down the left field line doubling and scored both Lyons and Hapeman. The Mavericks pulled out the exciting win 4-3.
Game leaders for the Mavericks were Adimey going 3-3 with two doubles and one RBI, Lyons going 1-3 with one RBI and two runs scored, and Fenstermaker going 1-4 with the game winning two RBI double. Alguire was credited with the win in the circle for the Mavs. She completed the game allowing six hits while striking out four batters.
Game Two
The Mavs started out strong again in game two. Presutti was the lead-off and started the inning with a walk. Lyons dropped a sacrifice bunt and moved Presutti to second.
Abbigail Doherty (Clarence, NY, Clarence) was up next and hit a shot to force an error, and Presutti made it to third. Adimey, still on a hot streak, hit a single to center field and scored Presutti. The Mavs were in the lead again, 1-0.
The Lions were not going down without a fight, and put their first run on the board in the second inning. They got things started with a lead-off triple over
Shay Sommer (Grand Island, NY, Grand Island)'s head in right field. A single in the next at bat scored the runner from third, and the Lions tied it up 1-1.
The Mavs answered back in the bottom of the inning. With two outs,
April Chambers (Lockport, NY, Starpoint - Niagara CCC) hit a single through the left side of the field. Presutti was up next and singled to right field, moving Chambers over. Lyons joined the party and hit a single to center field, and Chambers scored from second. The Mavs took back their lead.
The Mavs scored their final run in the fourth inning. With two outs, Presutti hit a slow roller to third and beat the throw to first for the hit. Lyons hit a ball in between the first and second baseman. The second baseman never touched first, causing an error, and Lyons was on first, and Presutti took the extra base and made it to third. Doherty hit a blooper in between second and right field, the second baseman dropped the ball, and Presutti came in to score. The Mavericks were up 3-2.
With one last chance in the top of the seventh inning, the Lions got a lead-off single. The next batter hit into the left side, Presutti made a great diving play to stop it from going to the outfield, but the runner beat it. They had runners on first and second with no outs. The next batter laid down a sacrifice bunt, and the runners advanced with one out. Alguire got a crucial strikeout for the second out, and the Mavs only needed one more out. Presutti made a play on a ball up the middle and touched second for the last out. The Mavericks picked up the sweep with a 3-2 win in game two.
Game leaders for the Mavericks were Presutti going 2-3 with two runs scored, Lyons going 1-2 with one RBI, and Adimey going 1-3 with one RBI. Alguire pitched the complete game getting her second win of the day. She allowed 12 hits while striking out four batters.
The Mavs continue their AMCC weekend on Sunday, April 10. They will travel to La Roche for a double header. Game one starts at 1:00 p.m.
