PITTSBURGH, P.A. – The Medaille College softball team took home two big AMCC wins over the La Roche Redhawks today. The Mavericks won game on 11-1 in five innings, and game two 11-9 with a big comeback.
Game One
After two big wins on Saturday, the Mavericks were fired up for their second AMCC double header of the weekend. To get things started in the first inning, Kylie Lyons beat out a ball to the shortstop to get on with one out. With two outs, Camryn Adimey walked, and then Shay Sommer singled to center field to score Lyons. Brenna Fenstermaker singled to left field and advanced the runners. The bases were loaded, still with two outs. Sidney Cooper was up next and walked, scoring Adimey from third. Audra Marley had the fourth single of the inning, this one to center field and scored Shay from third. Cooper was caught trying to get to third and the Mavs ended the inning up 4-0.
The Mavs scored their fifth run in the third inning. Sommer led it off with a double to right field. Fenstermaker grounded out, but moved Sommer over to third. Marley beat out a ball to the shortstop and Sommer made her way across the plate.
In their next ups, the Mavs scored another run. With two outs, Abbigail Doherty made her way to first on a walk. Adimey did the same, and runners were on first and second. Sommer's bat stayed hot and hit a single to left field, which brough Doherty around to home. The Mavs extended their lead 6-0.
The Redhawks finally scored in the bottom of the fourth inning. They got a walk with one out to start things off. On a wild pitch, the runner advanced to second. With two outs, a fielding error put another runner on, and lead runner was on third. A single to left field brought that runner in, and that would finish it for the Redhawks runs.
The Mavs finished it off in the fifth inning. Cooper led-off the inning with a walk. Haley Kennedy came in to pinch run for her. April Chambers beat the throw from third base for a single, Kennedy moved to second. Gabby Presutti walked, and the bases were loaded. Lyons hit a grounder to the shortstop who got Kennedy going home. There were two outs with the bases loaded. Doherty walked, bringing in Chambers from third. Adimey followed with another walk, and Presutti made her way home. Finally, Sommer hit a double and brought Lyons, Doherty, and Adimey home. This would do it, and the Mavericks took game one 11-1 in five innings.
Game leaders for the Mavericks were Sommer going 4-4 with two doubles, five RBI's, and two runs scored, Marley going 2-3 with three RBI's, and Doherty going 1-2 with one double, one RBI, and two runs scored. Alexis Alguire was credited with the win in the circle. She allowed seven hits while striking out two batters.
Game Two
The Mavs jumped on the board early again in game two. Lyons made it to first on an error. With two outs, Adimey tripled, and brought Lyons home. The Redhawks answered right back in the bottom of the first. Their lead-off batter walked, but the next one up sacrificed and moved the runner to third. With one out, the Redhawks hit a single to left field, and the runner scored from third. The next batter grounded out, but moved the runner to second. With two outs, they hit a single, and scored the runner. The Redhawks had their first lead of the day, 2-1.
Things were quiet until the bottom of the third inning. The Redhawks got their lead-off hitter on due to an error. The next batter hit a single to center field, and moved the runner to second. A hit-by-pitch loaded up the bases with no outs. A single to right field scored the runner from third, keeping the bases loaded. A pinch hitter entered the game, and she singled to left and score the runner from third.
An error scored the next runner, but Chambers was able to get the girl out going to second base. Two ground outs finished the inning, and the Mavericks had a lot of work to do, trailing 1-5.
They came back with three runs in the fourth inning. Doherty started it off with a lead-off double to left field. Adimey singled to right field, driving Doherty home. Adimey made her way to second on a wild pitch, and Sommer was hit by a pitch, and headed to first. Sarah Hapeman came up next ad singled, loading up the bases. Marley drew a walk, bringing Adimey home from third. Chambers was up next and grounded out, but still brought in Sommer from third. The Mavs were only down by one now, 4-5.
The Redhawks added one more run to their lead in the fifth inning. They started the inning off with two walks. The next batter popped up to Doherty behind the plate. A single to right field scored the runner from second. They were ahead 6-4 now.
The Mavs took their lead back in their next ups. Sommer hit a bomb to right field for a lead-off triple. Fenstermaker singled to center field, scoring Sommer. A ground out moved Fenstermaker over to second. With one out, Marley singled to center and Fenstermaker made her way home. The score was tied. Chambers was up next and reached first on an error, moving Marley to second. Presutti came up with a clutch double to left field, scoring both Marley and Chambers. The Mavs had their lead back 8-6.
The Redhawks were not done yet. At the bottom of the sixth inning they led-off beating out a ball to third base. She tried to steal, but Doherty was all over it, and caught her to Lyons for the first out. The next batter doubled, and moved to third on a fly out to right field. The next batters walked, and was hit by a pitch. The Redhawks hit a single to right field, driving in the runner from third. Another single scored two more, but the runner trying to get to second was called out so the inning was over. They took the lead again, 9-8.
The Mavericks finished things in the top of the seventh inning. Adimey starting things off being hit by a pitch to reach first. Sommer grounded out, but moved Adimey over to second. Kennedy entered the game to pinch run for Adimey, and Fenstermaker singled to left field to put Kennedy on third. Cooper singled to center and drove in Kennedy while Fenstermaker took third. Marlet grounded out, but still scored Fenstermaker from third. Chambers finished it out with a double that scored Cooper, and that would do it. The Mavericks won game two 11-9.
Game leaders for the Mavericks were Fenstermaker going 2-2 with one RBI and two runs scored, Adimey going 2-3 with a triple, two RBI's, and one run scored, and Marley going 1-3 with three RBI's and one run scored. Kaitlyn Alguire was credited with the win for the Mavericks. She allowed 13 hits while striking out three batters.
The Mavs stay on the move for their next AMCC matchup. They will travel to Alfred State on Tuesday, April 12 for another double header. Game one starts at 3:00 p.m.
