ALFRED, N.Y. – The Medaille College softball team won their fifth and sixth AMCC games in a row today against the Alfred State Pioneers. The Mavericks won game one 7-3, and dominated game two 15-5.
Game One
The Mavericks got things started in the second inning.
Shay Sommer (Grand Island, NY, Grand Island) was up first and singled to center field. She stole second, and made her way to third on an overthrow.
Brenna Fenstermaker (Le Roy, NY, Le Roy) hit a single and scored Sommer for the first run of the game. With one out,
Audra Marley (Watervliet, NY, Shaker) singled and Fenstermaker made her way home. Marley took second on the throw to try and get Fenstermaker out at home.
April Chambers (Lockport, NY, Starpoint - Niagara CCC) was up next and got herself a single. Marley advanced to third.
Gabrielle Presutti (Williamsville, NY, Williamsville South) was next in line for her own single, and scored Marley. The Mavs were in the lead 3-0.
After some 1-2-3 innings, the Pioneers made their way on the board in the third inning. Their lead-off batter singled, and then took second on a wild pitch. The next batter walked, and now runners were on first and second. A ground out moved the runners, and then a triple over Chambers' head in centerfield scored the runners. The Pioneers were creeping up, only down 2-3.
The Mavs added to their lead in the fifth inning.
Kylie Lyons (Olean, NY, Olean) started things off with a lead-off double to left field.
Abbigail Doherty (Clarence, NY, Clarence) hit her second double of the game, also to left field, scoring Lyons from second.
Camryn Adimey (Lakeview, NY, Frontier) singled to left field, scored Doherty, and then made her way to third on a throwing error.
Sidney Cooper (Elmira, NY, Thomas Edison) grounded out, but Adimey scored from third. The Mavs took a 6-2 lead.
The Pioneers answered back in the bottom of the inning. With two outs, they hit a single to center field. Another single to center, put runners on first and second. A third single in a row to center scored the runner from second. The Pioneers still trailed 3-6.
The Mavs scored the final run of the game in the sixth inning. Chambers hit a lead-off single to center field to start. Presutti laid down a bunt, beat it out, and Chambers made her way to third on a throwing error. Lyons hit a fly ball to left field for a sacrifice, and Chambers came in for the final run for the Mavs. That would do it, and the Mavs took game one 7-3.
Game leaders for the Mavericks were Fenstermaker going 2-3 with an RBI and one run scored, Doherty going 2-4 with two doubles, one RBI, and one run scored, and Lyons going 1-3 with one double, one RBI, and one run scored.
Kaitlyn Alguire (Forestville, NY, Forestville) pitched all seven innings of the win allowing eight hits with six strikeouts.
Game Two
It was a quick start for the Mavs in game two. Lyons stayed hot, and singled, advancing to second on a throwing error. Doherty with her third double on the day, hit one down the left field line and scored Lyons from second. The Mavs jump on them early, 1-0.
The Pioneers jumped to their own lead in the bottom of the first inning. Their lead-off hit a single to center field. A second single put runners on first and second. With two outs, a single to left field scored one runner, and then another single scored two more. The Pioneers had their first lead of the day, 3-1.
The Mavs were ready for a battle, and put more runs on the board in the second inning. Marley walked with one out. She stole second, and Chambers walked behind her. With two outs, Lyons beat out a ball to the pitcher for a single, and the bases were loaded. Doherty, who was absolutely on fire, doubled again! This time to center field, and Marley and Chambers scored, while Lyons advanced to third. Adimey walked next, and Sommer singled to left field scoring Lyons and Doherty. The Mavs extended their lead, 5-3.
The Mavs added one more in the next inning. Marley hit herself a double to left field, and Chambers bunted her over to third. Presutti grounded out, but scored Marley in the process. It was now a 6-3 lead for the Mavs.
The Pioneers were not giving up, and made the Mavs' lead smaller in the fourth inning. With one out, they hit two singles to center field. A third single loaded up the bases. A single to left field scored two runners, and the Pioneers now only trailed by one, 5-6.
In the fifth inning, the Mavs got one of those runs back. Cooper led it off with a walk.
Sarah Hapeman (Williamsville, NY, St. Mary's Lancaster) came in to run for her. Marley hit to the second baseman who got Hapeman out, but Marley beat the throw to first. Chambers and Presutti both singled, and the bases were loaded. Lyons hit a sacrifice fly to center field, and Marley made her way home. They led by two runs now.
They added to their lead in the sixth inning. Adimey led off with a walk, then Sommer doubled down the left field line. Runners were on second and third. Fenstermaker flew out to center field for a sacrifice and Adimey made her way home. Hapeman hit her first single of the game, and scored Sommer. Marley beat out a ball to the second baseman and advanced Hapeman to second. Chambers hit into a fielder's choice, and now Marley was at third, and Chambers was at second due to a throwing error. Presutti singled to center field, scoring both Marley and Chambers. It was 11-5 in favor of the Mavs.
In their final at bats in the seventh inning, the Mavs added four more runs. Doherty finished out her day with a single to left field. Adimey followed and did the same, advancing Doherty to second. Sommer singled downt the left field line and scored Doherty. With two outs, Marley tripled to right field, bringing in Adimey and Sommer. Chambers doubled down the left field line to score Marley for the final run of the game. The Mavs won game two big, 15-5.
Game leaders for the Mavericks were Doherty going 3-5 with two doubles, three RBI's, and two runs scored, Sommer going 3-5 with one double, three RBI's and two runs scored, and Marley going 3-4 with one triple, one double, two RBI's and five runs scored.
Alexis Alguire (Forestville, NY, Forestville) was credited with the win pitching 3.1 innings. She allowed nine hits and had two strikeouts.
The Mavs will look for their next AMCC wins on Saturday, April 16. They will host Penn State Altoona for another double header starting at 1:00 p.m.
