BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Medaille College softball team squared off with AMCC rival Penn State Altoona on Saturday afternoon at the Medaille Sports Complex. After a six-game win streak for Medaille, the Lions put a stop to the surging Mavericks winning both conference games 8-2 and 10-2. The Mavs fall to 18-10 overall and 7-3 in conference play.
GAME ONE
The first inning went scoreless for both teams and the Maverick defense took care of business in the top of the second to keep Altoona from scoring. Medaille took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second with an RBI single from
Sidney Cooper (Elmira, NY, Thomas Edison) scoring
Shay Sommer (Grand Island, NY, Grand Island) who got on from a hit by pitch.
The Lions responded in the top of the third scoring two runs to take the lead.
Kylie Lyons (Olean, NY, Olean) and
Abbigail Doherty (Clarence, NY, Clarence) hit singles but were left on base to keep the score at 2-1 with Altoona in the lead.
Kaitlyn Alguire (Forestville, NY, Forestville) had a strong inning in the top of the fourth keeping the Lions from adding another run. The Mavs struggled to get on base in the top of the fourth with a ground out, fly out, and strike out.
The Lions took all the momentum in the top of the fifth inning with five singles and a double. Altoona's success at the plate led to the scoring of four runs to extend their lead to 6-1. The Mavericks made contact in the bottom of the fifth, but the Lions made three straight defensive stops to end the inning.
Alexis Alguire (Forestville, NY, Forestville) took over on the Mound for Medaille as the Mavs tried to make a late-game comeback. Doherty got the Mavericks rolling with a leadoff single followed by a single from
Camryn Adimey (Lakeview, NY, Frontier). Cooper grabbed another RBI single hit down the right field line to score Doherty. The momentum was cut short for the Mavs as Altoona tacked on two more runs in the top of the seventh, sealing an 8-2 loss for the Mavericks.
Cooper led the Mavs offensively going 2-3 with two RBI's. Doherty went 2-4 with one run scored and Lyons also went 2-4. Adimey finished 1-2 and Sommer had a run scored. Alexis Alguire led the Mavericks on the mound with 3.0 innings pitched giving up five hits and zero earned runs and two strikeouts. Katelyn Alguire threw 4.0 innings giving up eight hits and five earned runs.
GAME TWO
The Lions kicked off the second game picking up right where they left off. Altoona grabbed an early 2-0 lead at the end of the first as the Mavericks struggled to generate offense. The Lions did more damage in the top of the second with a grand slam, extending their lead to 6-0. The Mavs continued to make contact at the plate but were unable to get on base.
Alexis Alguire relieved
Sarah Hapeman (Williamsville, NY, St. Mary's Lancaster) on the mound as the Lions tallied four more runs in the top of the third.
Audra Marley (Watervliet, NY, Shaker) reached first base with a walk and
April Chambers (Lockport, NY, Starpoint - Niagara CCC) moved her to scoring position with a single to left field.
Gabrielle Presutti (Williamsville, NY, Williamsville South) hit a single up the middle to load the bases and Lyons hit Marley in for the first run of the game for Medaille. The Mavericks kept the Lions from scoring in the top of the fourth while adding a run of their own in the bottom of the fourth. Sommer made it to third following an error from the right fielder and a single from Marley brought Sommer home. The Mavericks continued to battle but could not overcome the deficit losing 10-2.
Marley led the Mavs going 1-1 with an RBI and one run scored. Chambers went 1-2 and Presutti finished the game going 1-3. Sommer also scored a run in the loss. Hapeman threw 2.0 innings giving up four hits and six earned runs. Alguire threw 3.0 innings giving up four hits and one earned run.
The Mavs will look to bounce back against Keuka College at home on Tuesday, April 19. Their first game is scheduled for 3:00 P.M. with the second to follow at the conclusion of game one.
