BUFFALO, N.Y.- The men's lacrosse team battled in their home conference match against the Wells College Express. The Mavericks fell short losing 8-11.
The Mavs struck first with a forced turnover from
Lansana Kamara (Manhattan, NY, Iona Prep) that led to a goal by
Matt Kennedy (Hamburg, NY, Frontier) in the opening minute of the game. Wells responded quickly with back-to-back goals to take a 2-1 lead. The Mavs tightened up on defense as neither team could score over the next five minutes. The Express found their rhythm late in the first quarter and picked up two more goals to close out the first quarter.
The Express picked up their fifth goal within the first 30 seconds of the second quarter. The momentum shifted in favor of the Mavs as
Colton Keane (Lafayette, NY, Lafayette) netted his first goal of the game assisted by Kennedy. A minute later, Keane scored again with the assist coming from Kamara. Keane continued to be a force for the Mavs adding two more goals with assists coming from Kamara and Kennedy. The Mavs went into halftime tied at five.
In the third quarter, the Express slowed the Mavericks down by adding two more goals.
Teddy Kurdziel (Depew, NY, Depew) made multiple saves as the Mavericks did well to defend the surging Express. Wells managed to break through the Medaille defense to score two more goals, leading 9-5. Kennedy added his second goal of the game assisted by
Max Scott (Batavia, NY, Batavia) with 2:34 left in the quarter. Keane picked up another goal off of a goalie rebound as the Mavs trailed 7-9.
The Express grabbed another goal early in the fourth quarter but Scott took the ball in by himself to get Medaille's eighth goal of the game. The Mavericks left it all out on the field taking nine shots in less than two minutes to try and reel the Express back in. The Express kept the Mavericks from coming back as they added one more goal with three minutes to play. The Mavericks played well as a team but dropped the game, 8-11.
Keane led the Mavs with five goals and recorded seven ground balls and caused one turnover. Kennedy had two goals and two assists while adding five ground balls. Scott had one goal and one assist while Kamara picked up two assists, four ground balls, and two caused turnovers.
Chris Newton (West Seneca, NY, West Seneca West) played well defensively and finished with six ground balls and one caused turnover.
The Mavs will return to action on Tuesday, April 5 for their home game versus SUNY Cobleskill. The game is scheduled for 4:00 P.M.
