BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Medaille College softball team returned to action for a doubleheader against Houghton College at the Medaille Sports Complex. The Mavs came up short losing the first game 2-7, and the second game 1-4.
Game 1
The Highlanders loaded the bases early in the first inning. The Mavs were able to get themselves out of the jam but let in one run in the process. The Highlanders managed to score another run in the top of the second as the Mavericks struggled to get on base. The defense tightened up for both teams over the next two innings as neither team could score.
April Chambers (Lockport, NY, Starpoint - Niagara CCC) grabbed the first hit for the Mavericks in the bottom of the third and
Brenna Fenstermaker (Le Roy, NY, Le Roy) added a single to center field in the bottom of the fifth.
Houghton held a 3-0 lead going into the top of the sixth where they tacked on four more runs.
Gabrielle Presutti (Williamsville, NY, Williamsville South) led off the sixth inning with a single but was left on base. The Mavs shut down the Highlanders in the top of the seventh but were still trailing 0-7. The bats came alive for the Mavericks with a single from
Shay Sommer (Grand Island, NY, Grand Island) and a double from
Sidney Cooper (Elmira, NY, Thomas Edison).
Audra Marley (Watervliet, NY, Shaker) hit a two-RBI single, but the Mavs could not make up the deficit, losing 2-7.
Chambers led the Mavs offensively going 2-3 while Marley finished 1-3 with two RBI's. Cooper went 1-2 with a double and Sommer went 1-3 with one run scored.
Kaitlyn Alguire (Forestville, NY, Forestville) threw a complete 7.0 innings with two strike outs giving up six earned runs.
Game 2
Houghton jumped out to a 1-0 lead to kick off the second game, but the Mavericks did well to get out of the inning with a double play.
Abbigail Doherty (Clarence, NY, Clarence) lined a single to left field, but the Mavs were unable to bring her home. Cooper hit her second double on the day to right field but was left on base. The Highlanders added another run in the top of the third to extend their lead to 2-0. The Mavericks had
Kylie Lyons (Olean, NY, Olean) and Doherty in scoring position, but the Highlander defense held strong.
After the fourth inning, the Highlanders scored another run to lead 3-0. Neither team could bring runners home in the fifth inning. The Mavs held strong in the top of the sixth with another double play to keep the Highlanders from getting on base.
Camryn Adimey (Lakeview, NY, Frontier) hit a sacrifice fly to score Doherty for the lone Maverick run. The Highlanders would go on to score one more run in the top of the seventh and secure a 4-1 win.
Cooper led the Mavericks going 1-3 with a double. Doherty and Lyons both went 1-3 with Doherty scoring the only run for Medaille.
Alexis Alguire (Forestville, NY, Forestville) threw 6.0 innings with two strikeouts and gave up three runs.
The Mavs will travel to the University of Rochester for another double header on Saturday, March 26. The first game is set for 1:00 P.M. with the second at 3:00 P.M.
