Two Career First Homeruns Not Enough for Yellowjackets

Softball Swept at University of Rochester

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Medaille College softball team dropped two to the University of Rochester Yellowjackets. The Mavericks lost 5-9 in game one and 1-10 in five innings in the second game.

Game One

The Mavs started the game getting their first three batters out to top the first inning. The Yellowjackets got things started with one out on an error in right field. She advanced to third. A single to left field would score their first run of the game.

The Mavericks put themselves in the lead in the second inning. Shay Sommer led off with a single to left field and Brenna Fenstermaker got her first career homerun over the left field fence to score Sommer. The Mavs were ahead 2-1.

Gabrielle Presutti added her first career homerun leading off the third inning. She homered over the center field fence. This forced a pitching change for the Yellowjackets. It worked out, because they got three outs before another run could score.

The Yellowjackets got their chance to answer in the fourth inning. Their lead off hitting singled through the left side, but catcher Abigail Doherty caught her stealing to Presutti at short to get the out at second base. With two outs, the Yellowjackets hit a double to right field putting a runner in scoring position. Two more singles followed, and the runner from second made her way home. A triple to right field scored the two runners on base, and one more run came in before the inning ended. The Yellowjackets took their lead back, 5-3.

The Yellowjackets added some more in the fifth inning. A one out single to right field got things started. The next batter was hit by a pitch, and there were now runners on first and second. A grounder to Presutti at short got the lead runner out at third to get two outs, but the very next batter hit a triple to right center. Both runners on base scored. They extended their lead to 7-3.

The Mavericks wouldn't be counted out yet. In the sixth inning Fenstermaker hit a first pitch single up the middle. Audra Marley and Sarah Hapeman both drew walks after. With two outs, Presutti drove in Marley and Hapeman with a single to left field. The Mavs were only down by two.

The Yellowjackets put the final nail in the coffin in the bottom of the inning. The lead-off singled up the middle and stole second after a pop-up. The next batter homered over the right field fence scoring the runner at second, and herself. That would finish the scoring, and the Mavs lost 5-9.

Game leaders for the Mavericks were Presutti going 3-4 with one homerun, three RBI's and one run scored, Fenstermaker going 2-4 with one homerun, two RBI's and one run scored, and Marley going 1-2 with one run scored. Kaitlyn Alguire was credited with the loss in the circle. She allowed 13 hits with one strikeout.

Game Two

Game two was not as exciting as game one. Presutti started things off with a single to center field, but Kylie Lyons hit to third base, and Presutti was out on the play. Doherty hit into a double-play, and the inning was over.

The Yellowjackets scored their first runs of the game in the second inning. A single to left field got things started, and a throwing error advanced her to second. A single to center field scored the runner from second. The next batter was hit by a pitch, and now two runners were on base. A double to right field scored the runner from second, and now runners were on second and third. Two singles and a double later, the Yellowjackets drove in five more runs. The Mavericks needed to get their bats going.

Hapeman walked to lead off the third inning. She stole second, and Presutti grounded out to first, but advanced Hapeman. Lyons singled through the left side and scored Hapeman. This would end up being it for the Mavericks' offense.

The Yellowjackets scored one more run in the third inning, and finished with their last run in the fourth. The Mavericks lost game two, 1-10.

Game leaders for the Mavericks were Presutti going 2-3, Lyons going 1-3 with one RBI, and Hapeman who scored the lone run for the Mavs. Alexis Alguire was credited with the loss allowing nine hits with one strikeout. Hapeman entered the game later and had one strikeout.

The Mavericks will begin conference play on Saturday, April 2. They will travel to La Roche for a double header. Game one starts at 1:00 p.m.
