BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Medaille College men's lacrosse team lost their first home game of the season against the Keuka College Wolves. The Mavericks lost 22-2.
It was a cold and rainy day out at the Medaille Sports Complex.
Teddy Kurdziel (Depew, NY, Depew) started the game in the cage for the Mavs' first home game of the season. The Wolves won the first faceoff and took a shot. Kurdziel made the save. A turnover on the clear led to the first Wolves' goal of the game at 12:59. They would come right back with their second off of the next faceoff at 12:17. At 8:22, the Mavericks took their first shot. It was
Colton Keane (Lafayette, NY, Lafayette) who had it blocked. On the Wolves' next clear attempt, they scored their third goal. The Mavs won the next faceoff, but turned it over in Wolves' territory. They took it down the field and scored at 6:44. Tyler McDaniel won the faceoff for the Mavs and
Matt Kennedy (Hamburg, NY, Frontier) scooped up the ground ball.
Max Scott (Batavia, NY, Batavia) took the first shot, but it was blocked, the Kennedy took a shot, but it was saved. After a good clear and a few turnovers, the Wolves struck again at 3:14. They would go on to score one more goal before the half. The Wolves were ahead 6-0.
The second quarter started with a Mavs' penalty for tripping. The Wolves got two shots off, and the third went in. The penalty was released. Keane got another shot off at 13:16, but the Wolves put another one in the back of the net at 10:59. At 9:35 the Wolves scored their ninth goal of the game. At 7:22 Kurdziel made a save and Keane picked up the ground ball. He successfully cleared it and went straight to the goal. He fired a shot from the middle, and scored the first goal of the game for the Mavericks. The Wolves would score one more goal with 15 seconds left to send it to halftime. The Wolves stayed ahead 10-1.
The Wolves started the second half with a goalie change. They won the faceoff and went down to score at 13:50. They struck again at 11:08. Things started to get a little physical and some penalties were called soon after. After the penalties were released, the Wolves scored goal number 13. The Mavs would win the next faceoff with
Chris Newton (West Seneca, NY, West Seneca West) picking up the ground ball, but a turnover came soon after, and the Wolves finished with another goal. Kennedy would get another shot off at 5:39, but the new goalie made the save. At 3:36, goal number 15 was scored by the Wolves. Three more Keuka goals were scored before the third quarter ended. The Wolves were ahead 18-1.
The fourth quarter started with a very physical faceoff. It ended with a Maverick penalty, and the Wolves took advantage of the opportunity. They scored at 14:07. They scored again at 10:59. The Mavs won the next faceoff on a violation, and Kennedy took the ball up the field. He fired one past the goalie, and scored their second goal of the game. The Mavs allowed two more goals, and that would do it. The Wolves got the win, 22-2.
Game leaders for the Mavericks were Keane with one goal, five ground balls and two caused turnovers, Kennedy with one goal and two ground balls, and Kurdziel who made 11 saves.
The Mavericks will play at home again on Saturday, March 26. They will play Westminster for a 12:00 p.m. start.
