Maverick Walk-Offs Decide First Wins on the New Turf

Softball Sweeps Elmira in Bottom of Seventh Inning Twice

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Medaille College softball team won their first games on their brand new turf facility today with two walk-offs. The Mavericks swept the Elmira Soaring Eagles 6-5 in game one, and 7-6 in game two.

Game One

Mavericks' softball was the first team to play on the new turf facility at the Medaille Sports Complex. The first action was at the top of the third inning. With one out, the Eagles got a runner on base with a single up the middle. With an errant throw from third, the next batter made it to first, and the runner on first advanced to third. A fielder's choice scored the first run of the game for the Eagles. A walk with the bases loaded gave Elmira their second run, and another Mavericks' error scored two more runs. A ground out to Camryn Adimey (Lakeview, NY, Frontier) at first, sent the game into the bottom of the third. April Chambers (Lockport, NY, Starpoint - Niagara CCC) led off the inning beating out a throw from third base for a single. Gabrielle Presutti (Williamsville, NY, Williamsville South) reached first on an overthrow, and Chambers advanced to third, while Presutti ended up at second. Kylie Lyons (Olean, NY, Olean) was up next and hit a single to score both Chambers and Presutti. Lyons advanced to second on the throw. Finally, Sidney Cooper (Elmira, NY, Thomas Edison) grounded out to the second baseman to score Lyons. The Mavericks were now only down by one run.

The Soaring Eagles answered with one more run to make their lead a little bigger in the top of the fourth. After a single up the middle from Chambers, the Eagles decided to make a pitching change. Presutti reached first on another error while Chambers advanced to second. Abbigail Doherty (Clarence, NY, Clarence) walked to load the bases. Shay Sommer (Grand Island, NY, Grand Island) followed with another walk bringing Chambers home. The Mavs were still only down by one.

Things started to settle in for the Mavericks now. Kaitlyn Alguire (Forestville, NY, Forestville) came in to relieve Alexis Alguire (Forestville, NY, Forestville) on the mound. The Mavericks had a 1-2-3 inning in the fifth. Brenna Fenstermaker (Le Roy, NY, Le Roy) doubled down the left field line, but she was the only one to make it on base in the fifth inning.

The Mavericks were still down by one run in the bottom of the seventh inning. They had to make it happen here. Adimey found her way on base due to an error to lead it off. Sarah Hapeman (Williamsville, NY, St. Mary's Lancaster) came in to pinch run for her. On a low ball for a bunt attempt from Cooper, Hapeman took her opportunity, and stole second. With her in scoring position, Cooper singled to center driving in Hapeman to tie up the score. Chelsea Prescott (Coupeville, WA, Coupeville) entered the game to pinch run for Cooper. Fenstermaker laid down a nice sacrifice to move Prescott second base. There was only one out with the winning run on second. A fly out to left made it two outs. Chambers made it on due to another Eagles' error. Presutti came up clutch with a single to center and Prescott scored from second. Presutti hit the walk-off, and the Mavericks won game one 6-5.

Game leaders for the Mavericks were Chambers going 2-4 with two runs scored, Cooper going 1-4 with two RBI's, and Presutti going 1-5 with the game winning RBI and one run scored. A. Alguire got the start on the mound for the Mavericks. She allowed six hits and had one strikeout. K. Alguire was credited with the win. She allowed no hits and had four strikeouts.

Game Two

The Soaring Eagles were ready to get redemption from the first game. They got things going in the first inning. Their lead-off batter was walked to put her on first. A blooper just behind second and a single to left field loaded up the bases. A single to right field scored the girl on third, while still keeping the bases loaded. Doherty was keeping a close eye on the baserunners from behind the plate. She saw too big of a lead-off at third, and picked her off. This first out got the Mavericks fired up. Hapeman, who was in the circle, would strike out the next batter, and Sommer in right caught a fly ball to end the inning. The Mavs got out of that jam only allowing one run.

The Mavericks' offense got started in the bottom of the third inning. Audra Marley (Watervliet, NY, Shaker) made her way to first off of an error. Chambers placed a nice bunt, and forced the third baseman to hold the ball to make her way to first on a fielder's choice. Presutti was walked, and now the bases were loaded. Lyons hit one hard to the pitcher for a single, and Marley made her way home. On a wild pitch to Doherty, Chambers made her way across the plate while Presutti and Lyons both advanced bases. Doherty finished the at bat with a walk, and the bases were loaded again. Sommer hit an infield fly to second base, but with the heads up play, Presutti scored, and both Lyons and Doherty advanced. The final scoring play of the inning came from a ground out by Cooper, the third baseman decided to go for the out, and Lyons scored on the throw. The Mavericks now led 4-1.

The very next inning, the Eagles tied it up. Their first two batters made their way to first on walks. A fielder's choice put the next batter on first, but an overthrow to try and get the lead runner scored her. This left runners on second and third with no outs. A single scored those two, and the score was tied.

Elmira kept things going in the sixth inning. A one-out single down the left field line put their first runner on base. A double to left center put runners on second and third. Two errors in a row scored two more runs and the Soaring Eagles took the lead back.

The Mavericks found themselves trailing again in the bottom of the seventh inning. This time they needed to score three runs to win it. Lyons got things started with a one-out double over the left fielder's head. Doherty flied out to third, but Lyons was smart and tagged up making it to third. There were now two outs. Sommer beat out the throw from the grounder she hit to the shortstop, and Lyons made her way home. Adimey singled to right center and Sommer found herself on third. Cooper found a hole through the right side and Sommer scored the tying run. They just needed one more. Fenstermaker made her way to the plate. A wild pitch advanced Adimey. Fenstermaker turned on one, and it went through the left side to score Adimey. Fenstermaker gets the second walk-off of the day, and the Mavs win 7-6.

Game leaders for the Mavericks were Lyons going 2-4 with an RBI and two runs scored, Sommer going 1-3 with an RBI and one run scored, and Fenstermaker going 1-4 with the game-winning RBI. Hapeman started the game in the circle. She allowed four hits while getting two strikeouts. K. Alguire came in to finish it and was credited with the win. She allowed four hits and had one strikeout.

The Mavs will be right back at home on Thursday, March 24. The Houghton College Highlanders will make the trip to Buffalo for a double header starting at 3:00 p.m.
