MYRTLE BEACH, N.Y. – The Medaille College softball team finished out their week at the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic with two mercy's over the Keystone Giants and the Morrisville Mustangs. The Mavericks won game one 8-0 in six innings, and won game two 9-1 in five innings.
Game One
Alexis Alguire (Forestville, NY, Forestville) got the start on the mound against the Giants. The Mavs held them to no score at the top of the first, and got started in the bottom of the inning.
Gabrielle Presutti (Williamsville, NY, Williamsville South) was the first to get on base due to getting hit by a pitch.
Abbigail Doherty (Clarence, NY, Clarence) singled to left field and moved Presutti over to second.
Shay Sommer (Grand Island, NY, Grand Island) made her way to first after being hit, and the bases were loaded.
Camryn Adimey (Lakeview, NY, Frontier) hit one over the centerfielder's head for a double and scored Presutti and Doherty. The Mavs took the lead.
In the second inning, Alguire pitched a 1-2-3 inning, getting a pop-up and two ground outs. The Giants decided to make a pitching change to start the bottom of the inning.
Audra Marley (Watervliet, NY, Shaker) had a very patient at bat to get it started, and ended up walking.
April Chambers (Lockport, NY, Starpoint - Niagara CCC) laid down a beautiful bunt to the third baseman for the sacrifice. Marley noticed no one covering third as she rounded second, and took it. Presutti was up to bat with Marley at third with only one out. She turned on the ball and hit a single through the left side for Marley to cross the plate. Presutti took second on a wild pitch, then
Sidney Cooper (Elmira, NY, Thomas Edison) made her way to first with a blooper single to center. Doherty reached first after a grounder to third. The third baseman touched third to get Presutti out on the force. With two outs, Sommer hit a bomb to left center ending in a triple, scoring both Cooper and Doherty. The Mavs extended their lead 5-0.
The Mavericks were playing tight defense, but the Giants were starting to get some more hits.
Kaitlyn Alguire (Forestville, NY, Forestville) took the mound at the top of the fifth. The Giants lined out to second and struck out twice for a quick inning. Marley led off again, this time hitting a single just by the second baseman up the middle. She would take second off of a wild pitch. Chambers singled to center which scored Marley from second. Presutti added another single, this one through the left side again. Chambers advanced to second. Cooper walked to load up the bases. Doherty hit a sacrifice fly to center to score Chambers, and the Mavs kept their feet on the gas leading 7-0.
The Giants started to make something happen in the sixth inning. They started it off with their lead-off making it to first on an error. Doherty shut that down catching her stealing to second with a throw from behind the plate to Presutti. The Giants answered back with a two singles to center. The next batter hit to Presutti at short, where she threw the runner out going to third. They ended their at bat with a ground out to second. The Mavericks finished off the game in the bottom of the inning. Adimey hit a triple over the right fielder's head to immediately get into scoring position.
Haley Kennedy (Chestermere, AB, Chestermere) came in to pinch run for Adimey. Lyons walked, and then
Brenna Fenstermaker (Le Roy, NY, Le Roy) was called in to pinch hit. She found left center to drive in Kennedy at third. Due to the mercy rule, the Mavs ended the game there, winning 8-0.
Game leaders for the Mavericks were Adimey going 3-3 with two RBI's, Presutti going 2-3 with one RBI and one run scored, and Sommer going 2-3 with two RBI's. A. Alguire was credited with the win. She only allowed two hits. K. Alguire had two strikeouts.
Game Two
After a mercy in game one, the Mavericks were determined to finish off their week going 9-1. Adimey was the one to get things going in the second inning. She turned on a pitch and drove it hard down the left field line reaching second for a double. Lyons was up next and singled to left center to drive in Adimey from second. Lyons advanced on the throw all the way to third. Fenstermaker got her second single of the day, hitting into left center. She would score Lyons from third. Marley walked her way to first, advancing Fenstermaker. They both advanced on a passed ball. Chambers singled to second base to score Fenstermaker. Marley scored on the throw, and Chambers made her way to third. Presutti singled through the left side to score Chambers. The Mavs took a big lead, 5-0.
The Mustangs got on the board in the third inning. Their lead-off batter walked to start things off. With a sacrifice bunt, the runner advanced to second. On an errant throw to first, they got their only run across the plate.
Sarah Hapeman (Williamsville, NY, St. Mary's Lancaster) struck out a batter, and forced a ground-out to short to end the inning. The Mavs continued to score in the bottom of the third. Lyons singled to left center on one out. She stole second, putting her in scoring position for Fenstermaker. She would single to right field driving Lyons home. Marley hit to the right fielder, where she made an error. Fenstermaker reached third. Chambers hit her second single to left of the game, and scored Fenstermaker. The Mavs stayed up, 7-1.
The final action of the game was in the bottom of the fifth inning. Lyons doubled over the centerfielder's head to lead-off the inning.
Chelsea Prescott (Coupeville, WA, Coupeville) made it to first due to an error on the first baseman. Lyons made her way to third on the play. Marley singled through the left side, scoring Lyons and moving Prescott to second. Chambers reached first on an error by the third baseman, but the shortstop was right behind her and touched third on the force to get Prescott out. Marley and Chambers advanced to third and second on a wild pitch. Presutti grounded out to short, but scored Marley on the play, and that would do it for the mercy. The Mavericks won 9-1 in five innings.
Game leaders for the Mavericks were Lyons going 3-3 with one RBI and three runs scored, Fenstermaker going 2-2 with two RBI's and two runs scored, and Chambers going 2-3 with two RBI's and one run scored. Hapeman was credited with the win allowing only one hit with two strikeouts.
The Mavericks will head back home to Buffalo where they will play their first home game on the brand new turf field. They will play Elmira College on Tuesday, March 22. They will play a double-header starting at 3:00 p.m.
