Softball Splits Day Two of Tournament

Mavs Win Nail-Biter Over Wilson

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Medaille College softball team split their games on day two of the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic. The Mavericks lost to the Albertus Magnus Falcons 7-0 in game one. They finished out the day with a nail-biting win over the Wilson College Phoenix, 5-4.

Game One

The Mavericks started the day with a quick 1-2-3 inning on defense. Abbigail Doherty (Clarence, NY, Clarence) got things going after two outs with a single. Shay Sommer (Grand Island, NY, Grand Island) singled to center to put another runner on the bases. It would not go anywhere, and the score stayed tied after the first inning.

At the top of the second, the Falcons got it started with a double down the left field line. They singled on the next at bat, and they put their first run on the board. It looked like the Mavs were going to answer back. Sidney Cooper (Elmira, NY, Thomas Edison) started off the inning with a single up the middle, but she was caught on a hard line drive. Audra Marley (Watervliet, NY, Shaker) walked and April Chambers (Lockport, NY, Starpoint - Niagara CCC) singled off of a bunt, but they couldn't get anyone across the plate. The Falcons still had their lead.

The action continued in the fourth inning with a Falcon single from the lead-off batter. Three more singles later, they scored three more runs to put them up 4-0. The Mavs didn't have any answers, and went into the fifth inning still trailing.

The Falcons finished off their scoring in the sixth inning. It started with back-to-back singles. Corissa Wagner (Millerstown, PA, Greenwood) then went to the mound for the Mavs to try and hold them off. With a walk with bases loaded, the Falcons scored their fifth run. They had one more single to score two runs, and that would do it. The Mavs could not find an answer on offense, and dropped game one 0-7.

Game leaders for the Mavericks were Doherty with two hits, Cooper with one, and Chambers with one. Kaitlyn Alguire (Forestville, NY, Forestville) started on the mound for the Mavs and had three strikeouts. She was credited with the loss.

Game Two

After a game break in between, the Mavs were ready to go. The action started in the third inning. Marley got it going with a walk. Chambers hit one hard to the third baseman who tried to get Marley out at second, she made an errant throw, and now there were two Mavericks on base. Gabrielle Presutti (Williamsville, NY, Williamsville South) made it three after being hit by a pitch. Cooper came up clutch and ripped one through the left side driving Marley in. Doherty hit one deep to center for a sacrifice fly to score Chambers off of a tag. The Mavs had a 2-0 lead.

After a Phoenix pitching change in the fourth inning, the Mavs turned their offense on again. Camryn Adimey (Lakeview, NY, Frontier) got it going with a hard single back to the pitcher. Kylie Lyons (Olean, NY, Olean) hit her own single right after. A ground-out moved them to second and third, then Marley got to first on a walk. The next play was a wild one. Chambers hit a grounder back to the pitcher who threw the ball home for the force out. The catcher then attempted to get the double play at first. Lyons was speeding her way around third and saw her opportunity. She made it down the line easy and scored. This gave a big spark to the offense. Presutti was up next and crushed her third triple of the season up the right field line. This drove in Marley and Chambers. The Mavs were sitting on a nice 5-0 to end the inning.

The Phoenix were not going down without a fight. In the sixth inning, they started their comeback. They got it started with a dropped bunt for a single. The next two batters singled, and their first run was scored. At this point, the Mavericks put Sarah Hapeman (Williamsville, NY, St. Mary's Lancaster) on the mound to try and switch things up. One single and a fielder's choice later, the Phoenix put two more on the board. The Mavericks got out of the inning with a grounder back to Hapeman.

The Phoenix had one more shot to grab the win in the bottom of the seventh inning. They started it off with a deep double to left field. Alguire stepped in for Hapeman to finish the job. The Phoenix flied out to right field to move the runner to third. The next at bat, they singled up the middle scoring the girl on third. They were only down one. Alguire hit her spots and forced two fly balls. One to left and one to right. They were both caught, and the Mavericks slipped away with the win, 5-4.

Game leaders for the Mavericks were Doherty going 2-3 with one RBI, Lyons with one hit and one run scored, and Presutti with a triple and two RBI's. Alexis Alguire (Forestville, NY, Forestville) was credited with the win. She allowed seven hits with two strikeouts. K. Alguire was credited with the save.

The Mavs will take a break tomorrow, but will be right back at it on Wednesday, March 16. They will play Greenville at 9:30 a.m. and Muhlenberg at 11:30 a.m. to continue the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic.
