Mavs Triumph in the Rain

Softball Wins Two Over Greenville and Muhlenburg

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C – The Medaille College softball team swept both teams they played on a rainy day three of the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic. In game one, the Mavericks beat the Greenville Panthers 9-2. In game two, the Mavs beat the Muhlenburg Mules 7-3.

Game One

Almost as soon as the game started, so did the rain. The Panthers struggled early on due to the wet conditions as they were in the field first. Gabrielle Presutti (Williamsville, NY, Williamsville South) was the lead-off hitter for the Mavs and made her way to first after being hit by a pitch. Sidney Cooper (Elmira, NY, Thomas Edison) was up next and hit a grounder to third that was overthrown, sending Presutti to third. Abbigail Doherty (Clarence, NY, Clarence) drove a triple past the left fielder, bringing Presutti and Cooper home. Doherty took a chance on a wild pitch to steal home, but was caught stealing. Shay Sommer (Grand Island, NY, Grand Island) made her way to first on a walk, and Camryn Adimey (Lakeview, NY, Frontier) followed after being hit by a pitch. Kylie Lyons (Olean, NY, Olean) walked as well, but it wasn't until after a 40 minute rain delay. The bases were loaded. Corissa Wagner (Millerstown, PA, Greenwood) made it to first off of an error. That error scored Adimey and Lyons. Audra Marley (Watervliet, NY, Shaker) reached first on an error which score Wagner from third. April Chambers (Lockport, NY, Starpoint - Niagara CCC) singled up the middle and moved Marley to second. Presutti came up to bat for the second time that inning and singled down the right field line. Marley tried to stretch it out to score, but was caught at the plate. The Mavs finished the inning with a Doherty single to left scoring Chambers from third. The Mavs were in a good place leader 7-0.

The Panthers got their offense going in the bottom of the second inning. It started out with a double to left field. The next batter up grounded out to short, but the runner on first decided to try to get to third, and a wild throw scored the runner. It was now 7-1, still in favor of the Mavericks.

They continued in the fourth inning. A single to short put their first baserunner on. Presutti, Lyons, and Adimey had a nice double-play to clear the bases. They found their way on again with a walk. A double to center field would score her. The Panthers were slowly creeping back up. It was now 7-2.

The Mavericks turned their offense back on in the next inning. Marley and Chambers both walked to put two baserunners on. Presutti was hit by another pitch, and now the bases were loaded. Cooper had a hard single to second base and scored both Marley and Chambers. The Mavs took those two runs back and finished the game with a 9-2 win.

Game leaders for the Mavericks were Doherty going 2-4 with three RBI's, Cooper going 1-4 with two RBI's and one run scored, and Chambers going 1-2 with two runs scored. Alexis Alguire (Forestville, NY, Forestville) started on the mound for the Mavs getting the win. She pitched four innings allowing two runs with three strikeouts.

Game Two

It was a similar rainy start for game two. The Mules got an early 2-0 start after a walk and a hit by pitch were driven in off of a single. Presutti got it started again with a lead-off single to right field. She made her way to second on a wild pitch. Cooper took her turn for a single to right and moved Presutti to third. Doherty doubled down the left field line for the third hit in a row and scored Presutti and put Cooper on third. Adimey loaded the bases after a walk, then Lyons walked right after to score Cooper. Wagner hit to third, made it on base, but Doherty was thrown out at home for the force. Marley walked, scoring Adimey from third, and it forced a Mules' pitching change. Chambers finished out the scoring for the inning walking, bringing in Lyons from third. The Mavs took the lead, 4-2.

The Mules started off the second inning with a walk. She would head to second on a wild pitch. A single to left center would score her from second, and it lead to a Mavs pitching change. Kaitlyn Alguire (Forestville, NY, Forestville) came onto the mound to relieve Sarah Hapeman (Williamsville, NY, St. Mary's Lancaster). K. Alguire finished the inning with two outs in a row. Cooper got it started this inning. She singled to right center. Doherty walked, putting Cooper on second. Sommer doubled to left center, scoring Cooper from second, and putting Doherty on third. Adimey forced an error, and made it to second, while both Doherty and Sommer scored. This would finish out the action, and the Mavericks took game two, 7-3.

Game leaders for the Mavericks were Cooper going 2-4 with two runs scored, Doherty going 1-3 with one RBI and one run scored, and Sommer also going 1-3 with one RBI and one run scored. K. Alguire was credited win the win. She did not allow any runs and had one strikeout.
