Pioneers Take Down Mavericks

Medaille Falls to Utica in Non-Conference Match

UTICA, N.Y. – The Medaille College men's lacrosse team returned to play today with a road game versus the Utica Pioneers. The Mavericks lost 1-20.

The Mavs won the opening faceoff with Colton Keane (Lafayette, NY, Lafayette) taking the first shot of the game. Medaille fell behind early as a turnover led to the first Pioneer goal of the game. Utica added another goal shortly after before the Mavs tightened up on defense. Teddy Kurdziel (Depew, NY, Depew) held tough in net picking up multiple saves before the Pioneers put their third goal through. The Mavs battled with Chris Newton (West Seneca, NY, West Seneca West) and Keane both forcing turnovers. Utica's offense got back on track with five more goals to finish the first quarter. Tyler McDaniel (Baltimore, MD, Our Lady of Mount Carmel) opened the second quarter winning another faceoff, but the momentum continued for Utica. They would go on to score five more times the first half of the quarter. The Mavs held them off the final seven minutes of the quarter with Kurdziel recording two saves during that time.

Keane and Matt Kennedy (Hamburg, NY, Frontier) fired shots to kick off the third quarter. The Maverick turnovers proved costly as the Pioneers turned them into three more goals. With 7:12 to play, Kennedy put a shot on goal that was saved by the Pioneer goaltender. The ground ball was picked up by Martin Romero (Syracuse, NY, Henninger) and rifled to the back of the net for the lone Maverick goal. The Pioneers added a goal before Kennedy put another shot on goal to close out the third. The Mavs held the Pioneers to three goals in the fourth quarter but were unable generate any more momentum on offense.

Romero led the offense with a goal while Keane recorded seven shots and a caused turnover. Kennedy added five shots with two on goal. McDaniel had a team-high nine ground balls and won 12 faceoffs. Kurdziel made ten saves in the loss.

The Mavs will look to bounce back on Saturday, March 19 at home against Ohio Northern University. The game is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
