GREENVILLE, P.A. – The Medaille College men's lacrosse team lost their second road game of the season to the Thiel College tomcats. The Mavericks went down 19-4.
Martin Romero (Syracuse, NY, Henninger) was the starting goalie of the matchup.
Tyler McDaniel (Baltimore, MD, Our Lady of Mount Carmel) won the very first faceoff of the game and also had the ground ball. At 7:50 the Tomcats put their first point on the board. They scored off of a Mavs turnover. Less than one minute later, they struck again to pull ahead 2-0. With a failed clear attempt from the Mavs, at 4:03, the Tomcats scored their third of the game. It was the same story only 30 seconds later, another failed clear attempt that turned into a Tomcat goal. With one second left of the first quarter, the Tomcats hit the back of the net again on a second-chance shot. The Tomcats led 5-0.
The second quarter started with a quick shot off of the faceoff from Thiel. Romero made the save.
Logan Filipiak (Strykersville, NY, Holland) ripped a shot wide at 12:08 that the Tomcats would recover. On that possession, the Tomcats scored. The Mavs won the next faceoff with a ground ball pickup by
Lansana Kamara (Manhattan, NY, Iona Prep). The ball ended up being turned over with multiple shots taken by the Tomcats. Romero shut it down with two saves to get to a Mavs' clear. After a turnover at 6:23, the Tomcats picked it up and finished for their seventh goal. Two minutes later, they scored again. McDaniel won the next faceoff with ground ball pickup by
Chris Newton (West Seneca, NY, West Seneca West). This would turn into three shots in the row for the Mavs. Their offense was starting to show up. Unfortunately, with only 1:29 left in the half, the Tomcats would stop that momentum with another goal. This would end the half with the Mavs trailing 0-9.
Coming back from the half, the Tomcats scored right away. A turnover by the Mavs would end in the Tomcats' next goal at 13 minutes. Right from the next two faceoffs, they went in for two more goals. The Mavs managed to take some more time off the clock, but at 9:03, the Tomcats struck again. They would score one more before the Mavs finally found their way onto the scoreboard. At 6:04,
Matt Kennedy (Hamburg, NY, Frontier) caused a turnover during a Thiel clear attempt. He picked up the ground ball and took it to the net. He scored the first of the game for the Mavericks from
Max Scott (Batavia, NY, Batavia). The Tomcats answered back at 4:39. McDaniel won another faceoff this time picking up the ground ball. Filipiak fired a shot off of that possession, but it was saved. The Theil clear attempt was good, and ended in another goal. At 3:19,
Kyle Durwald (Kenmore, NY, Sweet Home) ripped a shot that hit the crossbar. It would be picked up by another Mav and shown the back of the net by Durwald. Kennedy was the assist. The Tomcats would finish off the quarter with two more goals, making it 19-2.
The final quarter started with a McDaniel won faceoff with
Colton Keane (Lafayette, NY, Lafayette) picking up the ground ball. This was the spark the Mavs needed, because Kamara finished the possession with a goal. He was assisted by McDaniel. With 4:05 left in regulation, the Mavericks scored the final point of the game. Durwald scored off of a good clear attempt. That would finish it up. The Tomcats took the game 19-4.
Game leaders for the Mavericks were Durwald with two goals, three shots on goal, five ground balls, and two caused turnovers, Kennedy with one goal, one assist, six shots on goal, four ground balls, and three caused turnovers, and Romero with 11 saves. He is also credited with the loss.
