Saxon Offense Stuns Mavericks

Men's Lacrosse Drops First Game of Season

ALFRED, N.Y. – The Medaille College men's lacrosse team started their season off with a tough loss to the Alfred University Saxons. The Mavericks lost 22-0.

It was a very cold night to start off their season for the Mavs. With Teddy Kurdziel (Depew, NY, Depew) starting in goal, the Mavs lost the opening face-off. One minute later, the Saxons took their first shot and Kurdziel made the save. It would not be too long before the first goal of the game scored. The Saxons put one in at 13:06. With a failed clear attempt from the Mavs due to a turnover, the Saxons capitalized and scored their second goal at 11:02. At 10:13, their third goal found the back of the net. At 6:48 the Mavs managed to block and Saxon shot, but they picked up the ground ball and scored their fourth of the game. Right off of the face-off, the Saxons won it again and drove down to score. After their sixth goal, and a penalty from the Mavs, Martin Romero (Syracuse, NY, Henninger) entered the cage to switch out goalies. He would allow his first goal of the game at 4:53 off of a Mavs turnover. The Saxons would score three more goals before the end of the first quarter.

The second quarter started with another Saxon-won face-off. At 12:51, the Saxons scored their first of the quarter. At 11:24, the Saxons scored again, this time on a man-up opportunity. At 7:33, and then 13 seconds later, the Saxons scored two more. After a Saxon turnover, Colton Keane (Lafayette, NY, Lafayette) shot on goal which ended in a save. The Mavs showed a shimmer of offense. Not long after, goal 15 was scored. The Saxons would put two more on the board to head into halftime. The Mavs trailed 0-17.

The Saxons made a goalie change to start the second half. The Saxons scored at 13:53 off of a second-chance shot. At 9:40, Kurdziel fired a shot on goal, only to be saved by the new goalie. At 7:34, the Saxons struck again for goal number 19, which would finish out the quarter.

It was another quick start for the Saxons in the final quarter. They scored at 12:59 off of a Mavs' turnover. Alfred scored another second-chance goal after multiple attempts at 9:18. At 8:05, Matt Kennedy (Hamburg, NY, Frontier) took a shot that went wide. The final goal of the game was at 5:19 after another Mav turnover. This would finish it. The Mavs lost 22-0.

Game leaders for the Mavericks were Keane with two shots, one on goal, Kurdziel with two shots, one on goal and two ground-balls, Tyler McDaniel (Baltimore, MD, Our Lady of Mount Carmel) with one ground-ball and three face-off wins, and Romero with 13 saves. Kurdziel was credited with loss in goal.

The Mavs will travel to Thiel College on Saturday, February 26. They will play for their first win at 1:00 p.m.
