ALTOONA, P.A. - The Medaille women's basketball team traveled to Penn State Altoona for their second match-up of the season. The Mavericks lost 51-68 to put them to 7-10 on the season.
The Mavericks started off the game with a three-point play by
Morgan Kennedy (Philadelphia, PA, West Catholic Prep). Kennedy then scored another layup assisted by
Erin Hardick (Buffalo, NY, Sacred Heart).
Desmonique Veal (Buffalo, NY, City Honors) and Kennedy hit back-to-back layups to give the Mavs the lead 9-8 with 4:47 left in the first quarter. With nine seconds left on the clock, Hardick makes a layup followed by a steal to finish off the quarter 11-17.
Medaille began the second quarter with an early steal and layup by
Shyanne Trinh (Dorchester, MA, Stoughton). Followed up with a layup from Hardick to come within two points of the Lions. Strong inside play from Kennedy allowed the Mavs to battle with Altoona to stay within reach of gaining the lead. Hardick hits a three to put the Mavs down by four with 41 seconds left in the half leaving the score at 28-32.
The Mavericks opened up the second half to a slow start. Two minutes into play Kennedy hit a long two and Hardick sank both her free throws to get the offense going. Trinh grabbed a steal with 1:31 left in the quarter but was unable to convert her efforts into a basket.
Ariea Garrett (Cleveland, OH, Beaumont) was able to stay strong in the post at the end of the quarter scoring two points for the Mavs but was immediately answered by the Lions ending the quarter 38-50.
Kennedy hit a turnaround jumper to start the fourth quarter for the Mavs. Veal was able to score two jump shots as well. Altoona ran off with the lead and shot 63.3% from the field in the last 10 minutes. The Mavs fought hard until the final buzzer with a block from
Xaneya Thomas (Binghamton, NY, Binghamton) and free throws from
Caiden Crego (Newark, NY, Lyons).
Game leaders were Kennedy finishing the game with 17 points shooting 8-12 from the field and grabbing five rebounds. Hardick had 13 points and three assists. Veal was able to grab six rebounds and put up six points of her own.
The Mavs will play next at home on Wednesday, January 26 at 5:30 p.m. against Hilbert College.
