Garrett Records Double-Double in Win Over Hilbert

Mavs Defeat the Hawks 75-36

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Medaille College women's basketball team bounced back with a major Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) win over the Hilbert College Hawks. The Mavs put together one of their best games of the season winning 75-36.

The Mavericks wasted no time getting on the board with Desmonique Veal (Buffalo, NY, City Honors) leading the charge scoring twice in the paint. The Mavs played well defensively as Hilbert struggled to generate any offense. Veal's steal and layup forced a Hilbert timeout with Medaille leading 8-0. The Hawks found success at the free throw line and connected on a three to catch up. Shyanne Trinh (Dorchester, MA, Stoughton) responded with a three and Veal's inside pass to Morgan Kennedy (Philadelphia, PA, West Catholic Prep) in the paint put the Mavs up 14-9 to end the first quarter.

The Hawks came out firing early with back-to-back layups. Trinh connected on another three assisted by Erin Hardick (Buffalo, NY, Sacred Heart) as the game started to get physical. The Hawks managed to take a 22-19 lead before Veal and Trinh put a stop to their momentum. The Mavs picked up their physicality on defense following a timeout. Their efforts forced multiple Hilbert turnovers. Trinh drove hard to the basket and managed to pass the ball to Ariea Garrett (Cleveland, OH, Beaumont) who made a layup at the buzzer, giving Medaille a 34-24 lead going into halftime.

The Mavs continued their impressive defense into the third quarter with an early steal. The Hawks kept their focus and hit a three, but Xaneya Thomas (Binghamton, NY, Binghamton) made her mark with an offensive rebound and layup. After three minutes of play and a ten-point lead, the Mavs continued to play tough defense and forced the Hawks into a shot clock violation. The rest of the quarter was a scoring frenzy from the Mavericks as they scored from all areas of the court. The Mavs took all the momentum with a 54-31 lead at the end of the quarter.

The fourth quarter started with a three from Hardick as the Mavs continued to put the pressure on Hilbert. Kennedy, Trinh, and Blenman made the most of their scoring opportunities to go up 62-33. Garrett made a huge impact to close out the game with seven rebounds and six points in the fourth quarter. The Mavs continued to win the turnover battle and finished the game on top 75-36.

Medaille shot very well as a team going 32-59 (54.2%) from the field, 6-13 (46.2%) from three, and 5-8 (62.5%) from the free throw line. The Mavs had 36 rebounds and 18 steals.

Game leaders for the Mavs were Trinh with 24 points going 10-15 from the field and 4-7 beyond the arc with three steals. Garrett earned a double-double with 12 points and 16 rebounds. Veal had 14 points going 7-11 with four rebounds and three steals. Blenman recorded 11 points and two steals while Hardick led with seven assists.

The Mavs will return to home on Saturday, Janurary 29 to face Penn-State Behrend. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
