ALTOONA, P.A. – The Medaille College men's basketball team pulled out another exciting win over AMCC opponent Penn State Altoona today. The Mavericks beat the Lions 88-87.
The Mavs started out strong with a quick three from
Bryce Smith (College Station, TX, A&M; Consolidated) off of a steal from
Travis Sanders (Cleveland, OH, Euclid) right off the bat. The Lions answered back with two layups to take the lead. At 15:56, Smith sunk another three, changing the lead yet again.
Kendall McGill (Largo, MD, Largo) went up for another layup that put the Mavs ahead even more that forced a timeout.
Rodney Graves (Woodbridge, VA, Colgan) joined the party with another three for the Mavs putting them up 13-6. The Lions were slowly trying to get their lead back.
Tyler Sealy (London, England, DME Academy) took his turn sinking a three at 10:24 and
Jorarei Bile (Oxon Hill, MD, Oxon Hill) added two more to put the Mavs ahead by six. They kept a steady lead as the half went on. With just under three minutes until the half, the Lions found themselves within five points. They kept it close as the clock ticked down. The Mavericks went into halftime with the lead, 46-37.
The Lions started it off with a good three to put them within six.
Jaqwan Washington (Bryan, TX, Bryan) answered back with his own three to keep their lead. The Lions were not letting the score slip away. At 9:30, the Lions tied the score back up, 67-67. It was a whole new game. Washington answered back with a layup, only for the Lions to make two free-throws. At 7:29, the Lions took back the lead off of a made layup. They started to pull away slowly. With 3:40 left, the Mavericks started their comeback. McGill made a jumper in the paint to get it started.
Dante Moultrie (Buffalo, NY, North Tonawanda) grabbed a steal and finished with a layup in the paint and was fouled. He made the and-one to get within three. The Lions scored back to back to make it more difficult for a Maverick comeback. They grew their lead to eight points. With 31 seconds left, Smith sunk another three. Graves stole the ball and McGill finished with another layup. The Mavs were within three points. At 14 seconds McGill puts two more on the board. It's 85-87. With only two seconds left, Washington puts up a three, and drains it. The Mavs get the win in a buzzer beater! They take the game 88-87.
Game leaders for the Mavericks were McGill with 18 points shooting 8-13 with two threes, with six rebounds and 11 assists, Smith with 18 points going 6-10, all threes, with one rebound, two assists, and one steal, and Washington with the game winner, scoring 15 points going 6-10, with three rebounds and two assists.
The Mavs will travel to Pitt-Greensburg for another AMCC matchup on Monday, January 23 for a makeup game. They will play at 5:30 p.m.
