BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Medaille College women's basketball team faced the Pitt-Bradford Panthers at the Sullivan Center. The Mavericks edged out a 64-60 win in the conference matchup and move to 7-9 on the season.
Pitt-Bradford struck first with back-to-back layups to start the game.
Treanna Blenman (Brooklyn, NY, Greece Odyssey) caught the Mavs up quick with a three-pointer despite an aggressive defensive scheme from the Panthers.
Desmonique Veal (Buffalo, NY, City Honors) hit a jumper before the Pitt-Bradford guards scored eight straight points. The Mavs moved the ball well but could not finish at the rim, falling behind 9-18 at the end of the quarter.
The Mavs came into the second quarter determined to stop the Panthers.
Morgan Kennedy (Philadelphia, PA, West Catholic Prep) scored early in the paint battling multiple defenders.
Shyanne Trinh (Dorchester, MA, Stoughton) hit her first three of the game followed by two layups from
Xaneya Thomas (Binghamton, NY, Binghamton) to tie the score at 18. Both teams traded the lead with neither able to get too far out in front. Trinh grabbed a late steal and layup with
Erin Hardick (Buffalo, NY, Sacred Heart) adding some support from the free throw line. The Panthers managed to hit a three with nine seconds left to play as the Mavs held a 33-32 lead going into halftime.
Kennedy and Blenman both made layups early in the quarter but the Panthers responded with strong three-point shooting to take the lead. The Mavs faced heavy defensive pressure where Kennedy drew a shooting foul. Kennedy made both shots to regain the lead that the Mavs refused to give up with the help of Veal. The Mavs held on to a 50-46 lead going into the final quarter of play.
Veal continued her tough play to start the quarter driving hard to the basket making the layup despite being fouled. The Mavericks led by four points with 2:30 left to play. Veal grabbed a clutch offensive layup and scored to get the Mavs up by six with just over a minute left. The Panthers hit a three soon after but another Veal layup secured a 64-60 win for Medaille.
The Mavericks went 23-58 (39.7%) from the field, 2-11 (18.2%) from three, and 16-26 (61.5%) from the free throw line. The Mavs grabbed 44 rebounds and 12 steals in the win.
Game leaders for the Mavericks were Veal with a double-double scoring 19 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. Trinh put up 12 points and five rebounds while also adding three steals. Kennedy played well with 10 points and eight rebounds.
The Mavs head to Penn-State Altoona on Saturday, January 22 for their next game. Tip-off is set for 2:00 p.m.
