Women's Basketball Bests Altoona, 60-43

BUFFALO, N.Y. — The Medaille College women's basketball team was victorious in its first Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) matchup of the season against the Penn State Altoona Lions. The Mavericks improved to 4-4 on the season, as the Lions dropped to 1-8 on the year and 0-2 in the conference.

The Mavericks started off very strong with an early three scored by Shyanne Trinh (Dorchester, MA, Stoughton). They were rolling from there. With three and a half minutes left in the first quarter, the Mavs had a thirteen-point lead. They only allowed one more layup, and ended the quarter 20-7.

The Lions started to heat up once the second quarter started. They cut their deficit to only eight before the Mavs started their scoring again. The offense was doing a great job moving the ball around with impressive passing. The Mavs ended the half up 27-18. They shot 29.4% in the field, and 22.2% for threes. They also made five of their six free-throws.

After the half, the Lions started scoring again. An early foul from Trinh gave the lions free-throw opportunities. The Mavs quickly recovered, and gained a 14-point lead with six and a half minutes left. The Mavs kept the lead heading into the fourth quarter, 39-29.

The final ten minutes of regulation play were again in favor of the Mavs. With six minutes left, Trinh sunk another three that put them in a 12-point lead. Erin Hardick (Buffalo, NY, Sacred Heart) made a free-throw, and Desmonique Veal (Buffalo, NY, City Honors) made a jumper to put them up 52-37. This helped seal their win, 60-43.

The Mavs went 21-62 in the field, 5-13 in threes, and 13-22 at the free-throw line.

Game leaders for the Mavericks were Veal with 14 points, going 6-15, with seven rebounds, four assists, and five steals, Hardick with 14 points, going 3-12, with six rebounds, six assists, and four steals, and Morgan Kennedy (Philadelphia, PA, West Catholic Prep) with a double-double, scoring 14 points and had 16 rebounds.
