Women's Basketball Battles in Conference Loss to Mount Aloysius

Mavs Lose 48-51 to the Mounties

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Medaille College women's basketball team fell short in a close home game against Mount Aloysius College. The Mavs lost 48-51 and fall to 5-6 on the season and 1-2 in conference play.

The Mavs jumped out to a quick lead in the first quarter from a jumper by Junior Erin Hardick (Buffalo, NY, Sacred Heart). Medaille continued to put the pressure on with back-to-back steals from Sophomore Shyanne Trinh (Dorchester, MA, Stoughton) that led to two made layups. The Mavs continued their aggressive play and finished the quarter winning 12-4. The Mavs had five steals to the Mounties' one.

Mount Aloysius came into the second quarter with a much more aggressive game plan. Xaneya Thomas (Binghamton, NY, Binghamton) kicked off the scoring followed by a made layup from Desmonique Veal (Buffalo, NY, City Honors) and multiple made free throws from Trinh. The Mounties played tough and were able to string together points to catch back up to the Mavs. The Mavs had many scoring opportunities but were unable to finish in the paint. The Mounties scored 22 points to the Mavs' 12 to take a 26-24 lead going into the half.

Veal shined in the third quarter grabbing a quick jumper and free throw to give the Mavs back the lead. Veal also had four steals that helped the Mavs stack points and build their lead. Ariea Garrett (Cleveland, OH, Beaumont) and Hardick were able to find success scoring which put Medaille up 43-39 going into the fourth quarter.

In the fourth quarter, Veal and Garrett added a few made layups but the Mounties were not out of the fight. The Mount Aloysius guards caught fire near the end of the game and their success from range was too much for Medaille. Mount Aloysius edged out a close 51-48 win.

The Mavs went 19-66 (28.8%) and 2-11 beyond the arc (18.2%). Medaille shot 8-17 from the free throw line (47.1%) and managed to score 19 points off turnovers compared to five by the Mounties.

Veal led the Mavs with 16 points going 7-15 with seven rebounds and five steals. Trinh had 11 points going 4-17 with five rebounds and eight steals. Garrett and Hardick both had seven points with Garrett grabbing 15 rebounds.

The Mavs will return to the Sullivan Center for their home game against Cazenovia College on January 3. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
