Mavs Win Big In First Game Back From Break

Women's Basketball Downs Wildcats

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Medaille College women's basketball team won big in their first game after the holiday break against the Cazenovia College Wildcats. The Mavericks won 65-23.

It took a few minutes before scoring started up. Ariea Garrett (Cleveland, OH, Beaumont) put the first points on the board off of an offensive rebound, putting the Mavs in the lead. With a combination of good defense and missed shots, the Mavericks were able to keep the Wildcats to only one point scored in the first quarter. They were up 14-1.

The Wildcats scored the most points in a quarter in the second. The Mavs kept climbing as well and scored more than they did in the first. Treanna Blenman (Brooklyn, NY, Greece Odyssey) started it off with a good jumper to bring their lead to 16-1. At 9:33, the Wildcats made their first layup of the game. Erin Hardick (Buffalo, NY, Sacred Heart) was fouled right before the half and scored them both. The Mavs went into the locker room leading 29-10.

It took a few minutes again for the scoring to get started after the half. Garrett started it off again with an offensive rebound and finishing with a layup to give the Mavs 31 points. They kept their streak of scoring more than they did the last quarter. The Wildcats were still struggling and only put up five more points at the end of the third. The Mavs hold the lead at 47-15.

It looked like the Wildcats might make a run with three minutes left to play when they sank a jumper, and then a layup within 30 seconds. They made their final basket of the game with a layup with one minute left, but the Mavs stayed stronger and came out with the win. The Mavs won 65-23.

The Mavericks shot 29-79 earning them a 36.7 shooting percentage. They also went 7-9 at the free-throw line.

Game leaders for the Mavericks were Desmonique Veal (Buffalo, NY, City Honors) with 16 points going 7-17 with three rebounds, one assist, and three steals, Blenman with 14 points going 7-17 with six rebounds, two assists, and four steals, and Garrett with 12 points, 14 rebounds, one block, and one steal.

The Mavericks will return to conference play on Wednesday, January 5, where they will travel to Hilbert College. The Mavs will tip-off at 5:30 p.m.
