ELMIRA, N.Y. – The Medaille College women's basketball team grabbed their fifth win of the season today over the Elmira College Soaring Eagles. The Mavericks won 74-68.
The Mavs started off on a quick foul that put the Soaring Eagles on top 2-0. It led to a slow start, which ended with
Morgan Kennedy (Philadelphia, PA, West Catholic Prep) putting the first points on the board two and a half minutes in.
Shyanne Trinh (Dorchester, MA, Stoughton) and
Treanna Blenman (Brooklyn, NY, Greece Odyssey) added two made threes that put them right back in it, and started their lead. The Mavs ended the first quarter up 22-17.
It was a slow start for both teams in the second quarter. At just about six minutes remaining, both teams had only scored two more points. With a couple of key steals, the Mavericks were able to build a 10-point lead. It helped them keep ahead, while the Soaring Eagles were attempting their comeback. The Mavs wanted their bigger lead back.
Xaneya Thomas (Binghamton, NY, Binghamton) made a big jumper, then only seconds later,
Erin Hardick (Buffalo, NY, Sacred Heart) stole the ball from the in-bound, and put two more on the board. The Mavericks went into halftime leading 37-27.
It took just over two minutes before the action really started up after the half. The Soaring Eagles started the scoring after missing two free throws. They were trying to cut down the deficit. The Mavs were staying steady with their lead. They ended the third quarter up, 54-42.
The Soaring Eagles were not willing to go down without a fight. They managed to get more turnovers to try and inch closer to the Mavs' lead. They Mavs were being careful not to give up too many points to stray from their double-digit lead. The Mavs finished it out with a win,
Game leaders for the Mavericks were Trinh with 20 points, going 6-21 with three rebounds, one assist, and four steals, Thomas with 13 points, going 6-9 with eight rebounds, and three steals, and
Hardick with 13 points, going 2-7 with nine made free throws, four rebounds, 11 assists, and three steals.
The Mavs will take on Mount Aloysius in a final AMCC matchup before the break on Saturday, December 18. They will host at 1:00 p.m.
