Women's Basketball Falls to Nazareth in Season Opener

Mavs Lose 57-77 to the Golden Flyers

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Medaille College women's basketball team opened their season on the road tonight to face the Nazareth College Golden Flyers. The Mavs put up a strong effort but ultimately fell short in the non-conference matchup, 57-77.

The Mavs battled on the boards early on with neither team scoring after two minutes until the Golden Flyers grabbed a layup to take the lead. Shyanne Trinh (Stoughton, MA, Stoughton) responded with a three-pointer to put the Mavs on the board. Ariea Garrett (Cleveland, OH, Beaumont) and Taliyah Mann (Houston, TX, South Houston) added layups to keep the Golden Flyers within reach.

At the end of the first half, Erin Hardick (Buffalo, NY, Sacred Heart) led the Mavs with four of the team's five assists while Trinh led in points with eight shooting, 2-5 beyond the arc. Medaille stayed within range of Nazareth after two quarters of play only trailing 22-32.

In the second half, the Golden Flyers exploded on offense putting up 25 points in the third quarter. The Mavs struggled with ball security that led to a surging Nazareth offense before firing on all cylinders in the fourth quarter. The Mavericks came out aggressive with an early steal from Desmonique Veal (Buffalo, NY, City Honors). Garrett grabbed nine total rebounds while picking up eight points in the second half. Despite a strong fourth quarter that saw the Mavs put up 25 points, the Golden Flyers maintained their lead to take the game.

Garrett was the top point scorer for the Mavs with 13 and grabbed 16 total rebounds. Trinh finished second in scoring with 10 points followed by Hardick, Thomas, and Treanna Blenman (Brooklyn, NY, Greece Odyssey) all with eight points. Hardick also shot well from the line going 4-6 and chipped in a team-high eight assists.

The Mavs will travel to SUNY Brockport on Friday, November 12 to compete in the Brockport Tip-Off Tournament.
