Brockport Takes Down Medaille in Day One of Tournament

Mavs Lose 50-69 to the Golden Eagles

BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The Medaille College women's basketball team traveled to Brockport Friday night for their first game of the Brockport Tip-Off Tournament. The Mavs lost to the Brockport Golden Eagles 69-50 and fall to 0-2 on the season.

The Mavs came out strong in the first quarter with an early steal from Ariea Garrett (Cleveland, OH, Beaumont) that ultimately led to a made jumper from Xaneya Thomas (Binghamton, NY, Binghamton). Medaille continued to play well as a team with Erin Hardick (Buffalo, NY, Sacred Heart) and Shyanne Trinh (Dorchester, MA, Stoughton) grabbing a three-pointer each to keep the Maverick lead over the Golden Eagles. The Mavs finished the first quarter on top, 17-13.

Despite the early momentum and a 50% field goal percentage, the Mavs slowed down in the second quarter shooting 21% from the field. Both teams battled for the lead before Brockport ran away with it from a made three-pointer and layup late in the second quarter.

With the Mavs going into the third quarter losing 23-25, the Golden Eagles kept the pressure on for the rest of the game. Medaille managed to tie the score at 30, but the Brockport offense found their rhythm and widened the gap. Desmonique Veal (Buffalo, NY, City Honors) and Hardick added points late in the fourth quarter before the final buzzer ended the game with a 69-50 final in favor of Brockport.

Trinh led the Mavs with 18 points shooting 7-23, four of which were beyond the arc. Hardick finished second in points scored with nine and grabbed five assists. Garrett picked up a team-high 10 rebounds while Veal added eight points and shot 4-6 from the free throw line. Senior Morgan Kennedy (Philadelphia, PA, West Catholic Prep) added five points and three steals in the Maverick loss.

The Mavs will get back to work Saturday for day two of the tournament starting at 1:00 p.m.
