UTICA, N.Y – The Medaille College women's basketball team traveled on Tuesday for their game against SUNY Polytechnic Institute. Despite a strong second half, the Mavs lost to the Wildcats 46-59. Medaille's record falls to 2-4 on the season.
Shyanne Trinh (Dorchester, MA, Stoughton) and
Morgan Kennedy (Philadelphia, PA, West Catholic Prep) got the Maverick offense rolling in the first quarter scoring 11 of the team's 13 points. Medaille jumped out to a six-point lead with five minutes left in the quarter before the Wildcats rallied for 14 unanswered points and a 20-13 lead to end the quarter.
The Wildcats continued their momentum scoring another eight points before
Janell Steed (Buffalo, NY, Sacred Heart Academy) hit a three in retaliation. Medaille continued to take a high volume of shots but were unsuccessful in most of the second quarter. The Mavs managed to grab seven points in the quarter and fell behind 20-36.
Coming out of halftime, the Mavs regrouped for their best quarter of basketball outscoring the Wildcats 14-9. A fastbreak jumper from
Desmonique Veal (Buffalo, NY, City Honors) combined with another three from Steed and multiple layups from
Ariea Garrett (Cleveland, OH, Beaumont), helped close the gap. Medaille trailed the Wildcats by 11 points going into the fourth quarter.
Garrett scored in the first 11 seconds of the quarter to get the Mavs within nine.
Erin Hardick (Buffalo, NY, Sacred Heart) connected on two free throws to put the Mavs within seven points of the Wildcats. With Medaille trailing 38-45, SUNY Poly's offense got back on track scoring all 14 of their fourth quarter points with a little over six minutes left to play. The Mavs could not overcome the deficit falling 46-59.
Medaille went 16-52 from the field shooting 30.8% as a team. The Mavs shot 10-14 from the free throw line for 71.4%.
Game leaders for the Mavs were Garrett with 13 points going 5-7 with five rebounds, Steed with nine points going 3-5 with three assists, and Shinh with nine points going 3-11 and 2-2 from the free throw line.
The Mavs will return to play on December 1 at Wells College. The game is set to begin at 6:00 p.m.
