BUFFALO N.Y. – The Medaille women's basketball team lost 57-66 in their non-conference home game against the Fredonia Blue Devils. The Mavs are now 2-3 on the season.
In the first quarter, Fredonia stuck first off a quick jumper to get the game started.
Desmonique Veal (Buffalo, NY, City Honors)scored off a free throw to get the Mavs on the board. The Blue Devils capitalized on the Mavs' eight turnovers to extend their lead to 18-11.
The Mavs won the second quarter scoring 13 points to the Blue Devil's 12. Veal continued to be a force for the Mavs scoring an early layup while
Xaneya Thomas (Binghamton, NY, Binghamton) followed up with three-point conversion to get the Mavs within two point. Fredonia responded with a three-pointer but senior
Morgan Kennedy (Philadelphia, PA, West Catholic Prep) remained unfazed winning the battle in the paint. Going into the half the Mavs were trailing by six points, 30-24.
Despite a surging Fredonia offensive
Shyanne Trinh (Dorchester, MA, Stoughton) lead the Mavericks with two back to back three-pointers and a long jumper to shift the momentum. Both team traded points off free throws and battled down in the paint. Two late lay-ups from Thomas and
Erin Hardick (Buffalo, NY, Sacred Heart) put the Mavs within in five, trailing into the fourth quarter 47-42.
Fredonia pressured the Mavs in the fourth quarter forcing multiple turnovers and difficult scoring opportunities. Medaille's late attempt at a comeback fell short and dropped the game 57-66.
Veal ended the game with 16 points and seven rebounds. Trinh contributed 12 points and Kennedy had 10 of her own. The team finished shooting 35.2% from the field and 75% from the free throw line.
The Mavs next game is Tuesday, November 23 at 6:00 p.m. against SUNY POLY on the road.
