GENESEO N.Y.- The women's basketball team made a statement against SUNY Geneseo tonight winning 55-54. The team came out with intensity and never looked back. The Mavs move to 2-2 on the season.
In the first quarter, the Mavs started off to an impressive start going on a run to leave the score at 24-9.
Erin Hardick (Buffalo, NY, Sacred Heart) was on fire scoring 12 of her 20 points in the first.
Shyanne Trinh (Dorchester, MA, Stoughton) added four of her own points and two steals.
Ariea Garrett (Cleveland, OH, Beaumont) grabbed five out of her eight total rebounds for the game.
In the second quarter, the team stayed composed and played tough defense. With scoring from
Morgan Kennedy (Philadelphia, PA, West Catholic Prep),
Xaneya Thomas (Binghamton, NY, Binghamton), and
Desmonique Veal (Buffalo, NY, City Honors)the Mavs kept the lead going in the second half 33-26.
In the third quarter, Hardick scored seven more points and secured three rebounds. Thomas added another three points and Garrett grabbed three rebounds. Going into the fourth the Mavs held down the lead at 43-33.
In the fourth quarter, the Knights closed the lead to make it a one-point game in the last couple minutes of play. The Mavs continued to play strong defense not allowing any easy shots from the Knights. Kennedy added six more points and Veal and Trinh added to the scoring as well.
The Mavs shot 36.4 % from the 3-point line and 20-49 from the field. The team capitalized off the Knights' turnovers with 19 points. Hardick and Trinh both had three assists for the game. Veal grabbed a total of seven rebounds and Garrett grabbed eight. Trinh buckled down on defense earning a game-high seven steals.
The women's basketball team will play at home on Saturday, November 20 at 2:00 p.m.
