BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Medaille College men's soccer team won their eighth AMCC conference game in a row tonight. The Mavericks won the first seed in the AMCC Tournament over the Penn State Behrend Lions 1-0.
Tonight's game was the biggest of the season for both teams. Both the Lions and the Mavs went into tonight with a 7-0 AMCC record. This game determined the number one seed for the tournament.
The Mavs started out with the ball. They were having a hard time keeping in Lions' territory. The Lions were the first to get a shot off. It was turning into a very physical game. There were foul after foul until the first yellow card for the Lions 11:46 in. The Mavs gained some momentum but were stopped after a yellow card stopped them in the box. They were able to get the ball back one minute and a half later, and
Eric Metade (Brampton, ON, St. Edmund Campion) passed it up to
Sean Burke (Coventry, England, Bishop Ullathorne Catholic Secondary) on the left side of the field, for him to find the back of the net. The Mavs were in the lead 1-0 at the half.
The game became even more of a fight in the second half. Behrend needed to score. There were two more yellow cards in the first 15 minutes of the second half. The shots continued to fly. The Mavericks wanted a bigger lead. Both defenses were not letting anything by, and the half ended with no more scoring. The Mavericks clinched the first seed, 1-0.
Game leaders for the Mavericks were Burke with one goal, Metade with one assists, and goalkeeper
Dante Gesamondo (Lynnfield, MA, Lynnfield) with seven saves.
This would finish up the regular season for the Mavericks. Since they clinched the first seed, they will get a bye for the first round. They will host the winner of Alfred State and Pitt-Bradford on Wednesday, November 3. The time is to be announced.
