BUFFALO, N.Y. — The Medaille College men's soccer team won its fourth straight game Saturday evening, taking down the Hartwick College Hawks by a score of 3-0. The Mavericks remain unbeaten in their last seven contests and have looked unstoppable, earning six wins and one draw since their last lost on September 21. The Mavs improved their overall record to 9-3-1 and look to continue the streak against three more conference opponents in the coming weeks.
Medaille played a very strategic first half and got a feel for Hartwick's game plan. The Mavericks held a slight edge in possession, but used it to their advantage, outshooting the Hawks 10-5 in the first 45 minutes. Unfortunately, the Mavs could not find the back of the net to leave the score 0-0 at halftime.
The Mavericks wasted no time in the second half, proving that they had the Hawks figured out. At 50:41,
Eric Metade (Brampton, ON, St. Edmund Campion) crossed a pass over to
Ander Castillo (Bilbao, Spain, Mater Dei Catholic), who put the ball away for the first score of the game. It was Castillo's 16
th goal of the season, putting him in second in the AMCC for goals. Five minutes later,
Solomon Konesky (Buffalo, NY, Amherst) showed off his fancy footwork and speed, slipping by the Hartwick defense to boost the Mavs lead to 2-0.
The Hawks tried their best to get something going, but goalkeeper
Dante Gesamondo (Lynnfield, MA, Lynnfield) held his ground to keep Medaille's momentum going. In the 69
th minute, the Mavericks put some beautiful passing on display and were rewarded with another mark on the scoresheet.
Joseph Avallone (Southampton, NY, Southampton) got the goal from Metade, who earned his second assist of the day.
Gesamondo finished the day with seven saves in 90 minutes.
The Mavs return to AMCC action on Wednesday, October 20 with a matchup against Pitt-Bradford.
