Softball Ends Season in Three-Game Day Two of AMCC Tournament

Mavs Finish Up Spectacular Season

ERIE P.A. – The Medaille College softball team finished out their run in the AMCC Tournament with three games on Saturday. They faced the Alfred State Pioneers, the Pitt-Bradford Panthers, and the Penn State Altoona Lions. The Mavericks won game one against the Pioneers 3-0, won game two against the Panthers 6-1, and lost to the Lions 8-6.

Game One

The Mavericks started things out with a quick 1-2-3 inning with two strikeouts and a ground out, but couldn't get any runs across in the bottom of the inning after two runners were put on base. The scoring began in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Kylie Lyons (Olean, NY, Olean) led off the inning with a single up the middle. Shay Sommer (Grand Island, NY, Grand Island) singled down the left field line, moving Lyons over to third. Brenna Fenstermaker (Le Roy, NY, Le Roy) followed with a single up the middle, scoring Lyons and moving Sommer to third. With one out, Camryn Adimey (Lakeview, NY, Frontier) singled to left field scoring Sommer. That finished up the inning, and the Mavs had a 2-0 lead.

They finished up their scoring in the bottom of the sixth inning. With two outs, Lyons singled to right center field. Sommer doubled to left field, bringing Lyons around to score. They held the Pioneers in the top of the seventh, and the Mavs sent them home with a 3-0 win.

Game leaders for the Mavericks were Lyons going 4-4 with two runs scored, Sommer going 3-4 with one double, one RBI, and one run scored, and Adimey going 1-3 with one RBI. Kaitlyn Alguire (Forestville, NY, Forestville) pitched the win for the Mavs allowing two hits with two strikeouts.

Game Two

For game two, the Mavs faced the Pitt-Bradford Panthers, who they started off the tournament playing. They started things with another 1-2-3 inning with a fly out, a strikeout, and a ground out. Lyons was the spark plug again, as she made it to first on an error to art the top of the first inning. She advanced to second on another error, and she was sitting in scoring position for Sommer. Sommer singled through the left side. The left fielder tried to get Lyons going home, but she was too speedy. Sommer made her way to second on the throw, and the Mavs were on the board, 1-0.

The Panthers tied things up in the top of the third inning. A single to right field got things started. She stole second, and a ground out to Lyons at second moved her to third base. They hit a sacrifice fly and the runner scored from third. The score was even at 1-1.

The Mavs pulled ahead in the fourth inning. Abbigail Doherty (Clarence, NY, Clarence) got things going with a lead-off single through the left side. Audra Marley (Watervliet, NY, Shaker) laid down a sacrifice bunt, moving Doherty to second. April Chambers (Lockport, NY, Starpoint - Niagara CCC) grounded out, but still moved Doherty to third. Gabrielle Presutti (Williamsville, NY, Williamsville South) hit a hard grounder to the pitcher to force an error, and Doherty scored from third. The Mavs kept things going with two outs. Lyons was up next and walked, putting runners on first and second. Sommer doubled down the left field line, driving in Presutti, and moving Lyons to third. Fenstermaker followed with her own double down the left field line, and both Lyons and Sommer scored. Sidney Cooper (Elmira, NY, Thomas Edison) singled down the right field line, and Fenstermaker made her way home. The Mavs took a 6-1 lead.

The Mavs held the Panthers scoreless for the rest of the game, and they sent them home on a 6-1 win.

Game leaders for the Mavericks were Sommer going 2-3 with one double, two RBI's, and one run scored, Lyons going 1-3 with two runs scored, and Doherty going 2-3 with one run scored. Alexis Alguire (Forestville, NY, Forestville) pitched the win for the Mavs allowing five hits with two strikeouts.

Game Three

The Mavs jumped out ahead quick against Penn State Altoona. Presutti started with a lead-off single through the left side. She took second on a wild pitch. Lyons singled through the left side, advancing Presutti. Sommer walked, loading up the bases. Fenstermaker hit a hard grounder to the shortstop who got Sommer out going to second, Presutti scored in the process. Cooper grounded out next, bringing Lyons home from third. The Mavs had an early lead 2-0.

The Lions answered with one run in the bottom of the first. On one out, a hit by a pitch put a runner on base. A double to right center moved the runner to third. Another single scored the runner from third, and the Mavs were able to hold them off from there.

The Mavs put three more on the board in the next inning. Doherty led off with a single through the left side. On one out, Chambers singled down the left field line and advanced Doherty. Chambers and Doherty advanced on a wild pitch, and Presutti singled up the middle, bringing in both base runners. Presutti moved over to second on another wild pitch, and Lyons reached first on an error. Presutti scored on a wild pitch, and the Mavs had a 5-1 lead.

The Lions answered back in the bottom of the inning. They led off with a single through the left side, and another single put runners on first and second. A strikeout gave them one out, but a single to right field scored the runner from second. With runners on first and third, a single through the left side scored another run. A fly out and a pop-up finished off the inning. The Mavs still had a lead, 5-3.

In the top of the third, Cooper walked to lead off the inning. Adimey singled to left center, and two runners were on. Doherty singled, but Cooper was throw out going to third. Runners were still on first and second. On a wild pitch, Doherty and Adimey advanced, and Marley walked, loading up the bases. Chambers hit a grounder to the third baseman, and Adimey made it home. The Mavs extended their lead by one run, 6-3.

The Lions added another in the bottom of the inning. They started it off with a walk. A single down the left field line. Another single scored the lead runner. With runners on first and second, they hit to Presutti at shortstop who threw to Fenstermaker to get the lead runner. They held them to only one run that inning, and kept a 6-4 lead.

The Lions held the Mavs in the top of the fifth, and scored in the bottom of the inning. They started with another walk. With one out, the runner advanced on a passed ball, but was thrown out on a fielder's choice. Another walk followed, and a double scored the lead runner. They were getting closer, only down by one 5-6.

They finally pulled ahead in the bottom of the sixth inning. They led off with two singles through the left side. Sarah Hapeman (Williamsville, NY, St. Mary's Lancaster) entered the game, to try and shake things up. They doubled down the left field line, scoring both runners. They Mavs held them from there, but they lost their lead, 6-8.

They had one final chance to take the lead in the top of the seventh, but couldn't bring anyone around. The Mavs ended their season with a 6-8 loss.

Game leaders for the Mavericks were Presutti going 2-4 with two RBI's and two runs scored, Doherty going 3-3 with one run scored, and Lyons going 2-4 with one run scored. Hapeman ended up being credited with the loss allowing one hit with one strikeout, A. Alguire had one strikeout, and K. Alguire also had one strikeout.

The Mavericks ended their season with a spectacular tournament, winning three out of their five games played. They will say goodbye to Hapeman, Presutti, Doherty, and Chambers as they graduate later this week.
