Softball Splits Day One of AMCC Tournament

ERIE, P.A. – The Medaille College softball participated in day one of the AMCC Tournament at host school Penn State Behrend. They won game one over the Pitt-Bradford Panthers 7-4 and dropped game two against the Behrend Lions 0-3.

Game One

The Panthers jumped ahead in the top of the first inning. On one out, they doubled to centerfield to put a runner in scoring position. A single to left field scored the runner, and that ended the first inning. The Panthers had an early lead 1-0.

The Mavericks made their way on the board in the bottom of the second inning. Camryn Adimey (Lakeview, NY, Frontier) started things off with a lead-off walk. Abbigail Doherty (Clarence, NY, Clarence) laid down a sacrifice bunt and moved Adimey to second. Audra Marley (Watervliet, NY, Shaker) singled up the middle, and Admiey made her way to third. With one out, Gabrielle Presutti (Williamsville, NY, Williamsville South) singled to right center, and scored both Adimey and Marley. The Mavericks took the lead, 2-1.

The Panthers tied things up in the top of the sixth inning. They had a lead-off single up the middle, and then bunted the runner over to second. With two outs, they singled to right field, and the runner scored from second. It was a 2-2 game.

The Mavs answered back in the bottom of the inning. April Chambers (Lockport, NY, Starpoint - Niagara CCC) singled to center field on one out. Presutti singled up the middle, and runners were on first and second. Kylie Lyons (Olean, NY, Olean) followed suit with her own single up the middle, and Chambers scored while Presutti ended up at third. With two outs, Brenna Fenstermaker (Le Roy, NY, Le Roy) singled to left field, scored Presutti, and put Lyons on third. Sidney Cooper (Elmira, NY, Thomas Edison) singled to right field, and both Lyons and Fenstermaker crossed the plate. Finally, Adimey doubled to left center and Cooper scored. The Mavs gained a convincing 7-2 lead.

The Panthers were not going down easy and put some more on the board in the top of the seventh inning. A one-out single to right field put the first runner on the bases. The next batter walked, and runners were on first and second. A fly-out to Chambers in center gave them two outs, but a single and an error let in two runs. A line out to Adimey at first ended it, and the Mavs had their first win of the tournament.

Game leaders for the Mavericks were Presutti going 2-4 with two RBI's and one run scored, Cooper going 2-4 with two RBI's and one run scored, and Adimey going 1-2 with one double, one RBI and one run scored. Kaitlyn Alguire (Forestville, NY, Forestville) pitched all seven innings of the win allowing nine hits while getting three strikeouts.

Game Two

The second game of the day for the Mavs was a close one. It took until the bottom of the sixth inning before any runs scored.

The pitching was the highlight for both teams. The first hit of the game was from the Lions in the bottom of the fourth inning. It was a single through the left side with one out. Marley and Presutti both caught the next two outs and the Lions went back out into the field.

Fenstermaker got the first hit for the Mavs in the top of the fifth inning. She singled through the left side. Cooper laid down a beautiful sacrifice bunt to move Fenstermaker to second, but they couldn't get another hit to bring her home.

It was back and forth like that for both teams until the bottom of the sixth inning. With one out, the Lions singled through the right side. A walk put runners on first and second. A single to center loaded the bases. A deep fly ball way hit to Shay Sommer (Grand Island, NY, Grand Island) in right, and she caught it and tried to get the runner tagging from third, but an errant throw on the cut ended up scoring that runner, and the one from second. A single up the middle brought the runner home, and the Mavs had to answer back in the next inning.

Sommer got on with a lead-off walk, but the next three batters couldn't move her, and the Lions took the game 3-0.

Game leaders for the Mavericks were Marley going 1-2 and Fenstermaker going 1-3. Alguire pitched all seven innings again, being credited with the loss. She allowed five hits while getting three strikeouts.

The Mavs will continue playing on day two of the tournament tomorrow. They will face Alfred State at 9:00 a.m. right back at Penn State Behrend. If they win that game, they will stay alive and play again later in the day.
