Hawks Defeat Mavericks in Conference Game

Medaille Falls to Hilbert at Home

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The men's lacrosse team took on conference rival Hilbert College Saturday afternoon at the Medaille Sports Complex. The Mavericks fought hard but fell to the Hawks, 20-3.

The Hawks jumped out to a strong lead scoring six goals in the first eight minutes of play. Teddy Kurdziel (Depew, NY, Depew) picked up a few saves in the process with forced turnovers coming from Lansana Kamara (Manhattan, NY, Iona Prep) and Kurdziel. The Mavericks held the Hawks scoreless over the final seven minutes of play in the first quarter.

The Hawks returned to scoring in the second quarter. Matt Kennedy (Hamburg, NY, Frontier) and Colton Keane (Lafayette, NY, Lafayette) were able to generate some momentum on offense, but turnovers helped the Hawks to an 11-0 lead.

Chris Newton (West Seneca, NY, West Seneca West) played well defensively picking up multiple ground balls and getting involved physically to keep the Hawks from an easy goal. Keane and Kurdziel continued to take shots on net but Hilbert was having all the success in the third.

Hilbert tacked on a few more goals in the fourth quarter until a penalty on Hilbert put the Mavericks at a man advantage. Keane took advantage of the opportunity and scored the first goal for the Mavericks. Kurdziel added a goal shortly after from a turnover with 6:42 left to play. The Mavericks would go on to add their third straight goal with 20 seconds to play. Kennedy assisted Keane on a quick one-timer.

Keane led the Mavs with two goals and a caused turnover. Kurdziel added a goal and three ground balls while Kennedy recorded an assist and a team-high five ground balls. Newton added four ground balls. Kurdziel also made nine saves while Martin Romero (Syracuse, NY, Henninger) finished with four saves.

The next game for the Mavericks will be on Wednesday, April 13 at Morrisville State College. The game is set for 7:00 P.M.
