GREENSBURG, P.A. – The Medaille College softball team traveled to Pitt-Greensburg to close out their regular season. The Mavericks lost game one 3-6, and won game two 8-5.
GAME ONE
The Bobcats came out swinging early in the game taking a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first. The Mavericks responded with a single from Shay Sommer (Grand Island, NY, Grand Island) in the top of the second. Sidney Cooper (Elmira, NY, Thomas Edison) hit a deep single to right-center field that brought Sommer home for Medaille's first run.
Kaitlyn Alguire (Forestville, NY, Forestville) struck out the first Bobcat in the bottom of the second, but the Bobcat offense came up big with two outs, grabbing two more runs and expanding their lead to 4-1. Gabrielle Presutti (Williamsville, NY, Williamsville South) hit a shot to the centerfield fence for a standup double but the Mavs could not bring her in. Medaille's defense held strong in the bottom of the third keeping the Bobcats from getting on base.
Sommer picked up another single in the top of the fourth inning but was caught stealing to end the inning. Alguire started to find her rhythm striking out two straight batters but a triple and an error allowed the Bobcats to score another run. Pitt-Greensburg managed to grab their sixth run of the game off of a sacrifice fly to extend their lead to 6-1 after five innings of play.
Presutti led off the sixth inning with a single through the left side of the infield and Kylie Lyons (Olean, NY, Olean) put a single down the left field line to move Presutti into scoring position. The Mavs continued to hit the ball well but could not string together enough base hits to score runs.
The Maverick defense held their ground in the bottom of the sixth inning and were down to one more trip to the plate to score some runs. Cooper led off with a single and Audra Marley (Watervliet, NY, Shaker) followed up with a single of her own to left field. Presutti hit her second double of the game off of the outfield fence that scored Cooper and Marely. The comeback fell short for the Mavs as the Bobcats secured the 6-3 conference win.
Presutti led the Mavericks going 3-4 with two doubles, one single, and two RBI's. Cooper and Sommer each had two singles….Alguire threw 6.0 innings
GAME TWO
Pitt-Greensburg picked up where they left off dropping three straight Maverick batters in the top of the first. They scored a quick three runs in the bottom of the inning. With the bases loaded, a single up the middle scored two runs putting them up 2-0. An error for what would have been the third out, scored another runner. The Bobcats had an early 3-0 lead.
The Mavs answered right back in the next inning. Brenna Fenstermaker (Le Roy, NY, Le Roy) singled up middle to get things started. Cooper was up next, and got herself a single to left field and advanced Fenstermaker. Camryn Adimey (Lakeview, NY, Frontier) loaded up the bases with a single through the right side of the infield, and Abbigail Doherty (Clarence, NY, Clarence) singled up the middle to score Fenstermaker. Marley hit to the shortstop who got Cooper out coming home, but Chambers forced an error to score Adimey from third. The Mavs were now only down one run, 2-3.
The Maverick defense tightened things up and left the Bobcats scoreless in the bottom of the second. They tied things up in the top of the third. Sommer hit a single up the middle, and Fenstermaker followed behind doing the same thing. Cooper laid down a beautiful sacrifice bunt, and moved runners to third and second. Adimey walked, and Doherty hit to third who bobbled the ball, and Sommer made her way home. It was a 3-3 ball game.

The Mavs added more in the fourth inning. Lyons reached first on an error with one out to get the offense started. With two outs, Fenstermaker walked, and Cooper stayed hot with a single to right field, and drives home Lyons. Adimey hits through the shortstop's legs to score Fenstermaker for a 5-3 Mav lead.
The offense wasn't ready to be stopped, and the Mavs put more runs across in the sixth inning. Sommer led off the inning on an error, and then advanced to second on the error. Fenstermaker singled to center, bringing Sommer around to score. It was 6-3 for the Mavs now.
The Bobcats finally put some more runs across in the bottom of the inning. Their lead-off batter hit a single to center to start things off. An error advanced the runners to third and second, and a single scored the runner from third. A passed ball scored the final run of the inning, with the Mavs still in the lead, 6-5.
The Mavericks wanted some more runs for security in the top of the seventh. Chambers hit a one-out single to center, and Presutti doubled to score Chambers. Presutti made it to third on the throw home. Lyons forced an error in right field, and Presutti made her way home. The Mavs were ahead 8-5, looking for three quick outs to finish things off.
The Bobcats weren't going to make it easy. Alexis Alguire (Forestville, NY, Forestville) came in to finish things off on the mound. Their lead-off batter was hit by a pitch to put her on first. The next batter reached on an error. A ground out moved the runners to second and third, and another hit by pitch loaded the based. They finished things off with a beautiful pitch from Alguire to force the batter to pop-up to Doherty behind the plate. The Mavs won their final regular season game, 8-5.
Game leaders for the Mavericks were Fenstermaker going 3-4 with one RBI, and two runs scored, Chambers going 2-4 with one RBI and one run scored, and Doherty going 2-4 with two RBIs. K. Alguire pitched the win with seven hits allowed and one strikeout, and A. Alguire got the save allowing no hits.
The Mavs will find out their playoff scenario after the rest of the conference finishes their games in the next few days. Day one of the AMCC tournament will start at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, May 6.
