BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Medaille College softball team dropped two games to the Mount Aloysius Mounties today. The Mavericks lost game one 0-2 and game two 1-11.
Game One
The Mounties got on the board in the first inning. Their speedy lead-off batter was on first due to an error. She stole both second and third, and a ground out scored her. They led 1-0.
The Mavericks looked like they were going to answer back in the bottom of the inning.
Kylie Lyons (Olean, NY, Olean) singled through the left side with one out.
Abbigail Doherty (Clarence, NY, Clarence) doubled down the right field line, and runners were on second and third. A strikeout and a foul out stopped their momentum.
It stayed close until the fourth inning. The Mounties started things off with a single through the left side. The runner advanced on a sacrifice bunt. A fly out to right field advanced her to third, and a single to right field scored the runner from third.
The Mavericks had their final chance to come back in the last inning. With two outs,
Audra Marley (Watervliet, NY, Shaker) singled to right center, and
April Chambers (Lockport, NY, Starpoint - Niagara CCC) got on due to an error. The Mavs couldn't bring the runs across, and the Mavs dropped game one, 0-2.
Game leaders for the Mavericks were
Sidney Cooper (Elmira, NY, Thomas Edison) going 2-3, Doherty going 1-3 with one double, and
Kaitlyn Alguire (Forestville, NY, Forestville) who was credited with the loss allowing three hits with five strikeouts.
Game Two
It was a rough start for the Mavs in game two. After getting the first out, the Mavs walked three batters in a row. The next batter hit a grounder for a fielder's choice. An errant throw home ended up scoring two runners. Runners were on second and third. A passed ball scored another run. After a ground out, a single to left center scored the final run of the inning. A pitching change for the Mavs helped get the last out. They were down 0-4.
The Mounties pitching was dominant for four innings getting the first three batters out each inning. Finally in the fifth inning, the Mavs put their first run across the plate.
Camryn Adimey (Lakeview, NY, Frontier) broke the Mounties' perfect game with a single to left center.
Shay Sommer (Grand Island, NY, Grand Island) reached first on an error, and there were runners on first and second. After a fly out, Cooper singled to right center, bringing Adimey home. It was looking up for the Mavs, down 1-4.
The Mounties made their final run in the last inning. It started with two doubles in a row. With runners on second and third, after a pop-up, a single scored the runner from third. In a miscommunication play from the Mavs, an error scored the next runner. A triple brought in two runs, and an error on the throw to third scored the batter. After two errors, and a single, the Mounties went on to score two more runs. The Mavs could not come back, and lost 1-11.
Game leaders for the Mavericks were Cooper going 1-2 with one RBI, Adimey going 1-3 with one run scored, and Alguire who came in to relieve
Sarah Hapeman (Williamsville, NY, St. Mary's Lancaster) in the first inning. She allowed 11 hits and struck out two batters. Hapeman was credited with the loss.
The Mavericks look ahead to their next AMCC matchup on Tuesday, April 26. They will host a double head against Hilbert starting at 1:00 p.m. This will also be their senior game, so a ceremony will happen before the games start.
