BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Medaille College softball team split their games against the Utica Pioneers today. The Mavericks won game one 5-0 and lost game two 5-6.
Game One
The first few innings were left scoreless, but the Mavericks were putting the pressure on. The lead-off batter for the Pioneers made it on base with a single through the left side. She tried to steal, but
Abbigail Doherty (Clarence, NY, Clarence) fired it to
Gabrielle Presutti (Williamsville, NY, Williamsville South) covering second, and caught her stealing. The next two batters grounded out and struck out.
In the bottom of the inning, the Mavericks loaded up the bases but couldn't find their way home. Presutti led-off the inning with a single to right field.
Kylie Lyons (Olean, NY, Olean) was hit by a pitch while trying to bunt Presutti over to second.
Camryn Adimey (Lakeview, NY, Frontier) followed with another hit by pitch. Two strikeouts would stop their momentum and the score was still 0-0.
In the third inning, the Mavericks got on the board. Presutti led it off with another single, this time down the left field line. Lyons hit a grounder to the shortstop who got Presutti out going to second. Doherty singled up the middle, and moved Lyons to second. With two outs,
Shay Sommer (Grand Island, NY, Grand Island) hit one up the middle, and Lyons made her way home. The Mavs were up 1-0.
The Mavs scored two more runs in the next inning.
Sidney Cooper (Elmira, NY, Thomas Edison) got things started with a lead-off triple down the right field line.
April Chambers (Lockport, NY, Starpoint - Niagara CCC) hit a single to center, and Cooper made her way home. Presutti hit a single to right field, and Chambers was caught trying to get to third. Lyons was up next and hit a shot to right center for a double. Presutti scored from first, and the Mavs had a bigger lead, 3-0.
They finished things off in the sixth inning. Chambers beat out a ball to the shortstop for a single, then stole second. Lyons made her way to first on an error. Doherty singled through the left side, scored Chambers, and moved Lyons to third. Sommer singled through the left side, and scored Lyons. That was it and the Mavs took game one 5-0.
Game leaders for the Mavericks were Lyons going 1-3 with one double, one RBI, and two runs scored, Sommer going 3-4 with two RBI's, and Presutti going 3-4 with one run scored.
Kaitlyn Alguire (Forestville, NY, Forestville) got the win in the circle allowing six hits with four strikeouts.
Alexis Alguire (Forestville, NY, Forestville) was credited with the save with one strikeout.
Game Two
Game two did not start on a positive note for the Mavs, but they were able to make a bit of a comeback. The Pioneers got things started in the first inning. A. Alguire struck out the first batter, but walked the next one. She stole second, and a single to right center scored her. The next batter walked, and a wild pitch moved the runners to second and third. A double to right center drove in both runners. The next batter was hit by a pitch, and a double scored one more run. The Pioneers jumped on the Mavs 4-0.
The Mavs found their way on the board in the second inning. Sommer was the lead-off and made her way to first on a walk.
Brenna Fenstermaker (Le Roy, NY, Le Roy) forced an error, and now runners were on first and second.
Chelsea Prescott (Coupeville, WA, Coupeville) grounded out to the pitcher, but moved both the runners over.
Audra Marley (Watervliet, NY, Shaker) grounded out to the third baseman, but scored Sommer from third. Chambers singled to center, and Fenstermaker made her way home. The Mavs cut the Pioneers' lead in half, 2-4.
The Pioneers extended their lead in the third inning. They started it off with a walk, then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Prescott bobbled a grounder at third, but made a heads-up play to tag the lead runner trying to get to third. The next batter walked, and loaded the bases. Two runs were scored next on two wild pitches, and the Pioneers were up 6-2.
The Mavs answered the in bottom of the inning. With one out, Doherty made her way to first due to the right fielder over-running her fly ball, then made her way to third on the error. Adimey flew out to center field, Doherty tagged up and scored. Adimey had the sacrifice fly. The Mavs were still in it 3-6.
In the sixth inning with two outs, Prescott made it to first on an error. Marley doubled down the right field line and moved Prescott to third. Chambers beat out a ball to third, and Prescott made her way home. They were only down 4-6 now.
They made their final effort to come back in the bottom of the seventh. With two outs, Adimey walked, and
Haley Kennedy (Chestermere, AB, Chestermere) came in to run for her. Sommer tripled to right center, and Kennedy quickly came home. They couldn't string together one more hit, and the Pioneers squeezed out the win, 6-5.
Game leaders for the Mavericks were Chambers going 2-3 with two RBI's, Marley going 1-3 with one double, and one RBI, and Sommer going 1-3 with one triple, one RBI, and one run scored.
Sarah Hapeman (Williamsville, NY, St. Mary's Lancaster) was credited with the loss allowing five hits with three strikeouts.
The Mavs will return to AMCC play on Saturday, April 23. They will host Mount Aloysius for a double header starting at 1:00 p.m.
