PITTSBURGH, P.A. – The Medaille College men's lacrosse team hit the road Thursday afternoon for their conference game with La Roche University. The Mavericks returned with a well-deserved win taking the game 11-10 in double overtime.
La Roche won the opening faceoff and scored on their first shot on goal. The Mavericks played aggressive forcing eight turnovers in the quarter. The Mavericks out-shot the Redhawks 15-7, but were unable to put points on the board. La Roche capitalized on the man advantage scoring two more goals to take a 3-0 lead at the end of the first.
The second quarter started in favor of the Mavericks with
Matt Kennedy (Hamburg, NY, Frontier) winning the faceoff leading to a goal from
Colton Keane (Lafayette, NY, Lafayette).
Logan Filipiak (Strykersville, NY, Holland) scored a minute later assisted by Keane as the Mavs started to gain some momentum. The Redhawks added a goal with 8:49 left in the quarter to put them up 4-2. A save from
Martin Romero (Syracuse, NY, Henninger) led to a quick clear from Medaille and goal from
Lansana Kamara (Manhattan, NY, Iona Prep) assisted by Kennedy. Romero picked up two more saves as the Mavs trailed 3-4 going into halftime.
The Redhawks scored their fifth goal of the game early in the third quarter, but Keane connect with Kamara for a Maverick goal with the man advantage. The Redhawks responded fast with a goal less than a minute later, putting them ahead 6-4. Kamara forced a turnover and
Matt Printup (Basom, NY, Genesee Community College) turned the Redhawk error into a goal for the Mavericks with Kennedy earning the assist. The Mavs would go on to tie the score at six two minutes later with a goal from Kennedy assisted by Romero. Keane picked up another goal assisted by Kennedy and the Maverick offense continued to impress with another goal from Kennedy to put Medaille up 8-6. La Roche snuck a late goal in following a turnover as the third quarter came to a close.
La Roche tied the score up at eight but the Mavericks refused to back down. Kamara and Keane connected on a goal 30 seconds later to give Medaille back the lead. Both squads played excellent defense over the next few minutes with
Chris Newton (West Seneca, NY, West Seneca West) forcing multiple turnovers. La Roche eventually found a way to their ninth goal tying the score up with 8:32 left in regulation. Keane took advantage of a Redhawk turnover to put Medaille up 10-9. La Roche battled with the Mavericks and tied the game up at 10 forcing overtime.
Newton forced another turnover in the first overtime and both Kennedy and Keane managed to take shots on goal. Romero came up with a big save and a second overtime period was needed to determine a winner. Newton picked up another turnover to start the second overtime but Kennedy's shot on net was saved. La Roche stormed back the other way but lost the ball. Kennedy took two more shots on goal with one hitting the crossbar. Kennedy snagged the ground ball and flipped it to
Nick Carmichael (Ontario, NY, Wayne) who scored the winning goal and sealed a 11-10 Maverick victory.
Keane led the Mavericks with four goals and two assists while adding five caused turnovers. Kennedy picked up two goals and five assists with four ground balls and one caused turnover. Kamara added two goals and one assist with three ground balls and two caused turnovers. Filipiak and Carmichael both added one goal with Carmichael scoring the game-winning goal and finished with two caused turnovers. Newton had five ground balls and a team-high eight caused turnovers. Romero finished with an assist and made nine saves in the win.
The Mavs will travel on Saturday, April 23 at 1:00 P.M. against Penn College for their next contest.
