BRADFORD, P.A. – The Medaille College women's basketball team dropped a tough on in the final quarter of the game against the Pitt-Bradford Panthers. The Mavericks lost 63-59.
The Mavericks started off on a positive note. They stole the ball off of a quick Panthers possession. They had great passing on offense, and
Erin Hardick (Buffalo, NY, Sacred Heart) drove inside for the first points of the game. On their next possession,
Shyanne Trinh (Dorchester, MA, Stoughton) netted her first three of the game at the very top of the arc. After some missed shots from both sides,
Desmonique Veal (Buffalo, NY, City Honors) made a layup putting the Mavs ahead 7-0. At 6:45 the Panthers finally put their first points on the board. Under one minute later, the hit another jumper, and put the score within three. Hardick drove in on a fast-break and was fouled, making both of her free-throws to expand their lead. The Panthers came right back and made a hook shot in the middle of the paint. At just under four minutes, The Panthers make a three and tie the game. Bradford started to gain some momentum here. A pass from the Mavs ended up in the Panther's hands, and they went scored on a big fast-break to put them in the lead. Veal stayed strong under the basket and made an important layup to tie the score back up. Hardick puts the Mavs ahead with a made free-throw and a layup. They wanted their lead back before the end of the quarter.
Ariea Garrett (Cleveland, OH, Beaumont) grabs an offensive rebound and passes it out to
Treanna Blenman (Brooklyn, NY, Greece Odyssey) who makes the layup. A great second-chance sequence. The Panthers stayed in it and sunk a three from the top of the arc to put them only two points behind. With their next attempts at scoring being unsuccessful, the Mavs take the first quarter 16-14.
The Panthers started off the scoring in the second quarter with a made layup to tie the game. After a missed shot from the Mavericks, they came right back down and scored again to take the lead. After a made free-throw and two jump-shots, the Panthers start a rally to go up 23-18. At 6:30 the Panthers make a three from the corner to really start building their lead. Hardick takes a solo three to start their own comeback. Veal makes a pull-up jumper at 4:22 to make the score 28-23. The Mavs still had work to do. Two minutes later, Veal makes another one putting them within three. Just under two minutes, Blenman makes another layup and now they only trail by one. Just under one minute, Garrett scores her first of the game, getting the Mavs' lead back. The Panthers were fouled on their next possession and made both free-throws to take the lead back. This would do it for the half. The Mavs go into halftime trailing 31-32.
The third quarter started with three turnovers which ended in a made layup from Hardick. The Mavs lead again. A Panther three changes the score again, putting them ahead 35-33. At 6:56 the Panthers make a second-chance shot growing their lead by two. Veal charges to the basket to make a layup after a couple of possession changes. Soon after, Veal hands the ball off to Garrett for a made layup. They now lead 38-37. Hardick adds another layup, but the Panthers hit a three and they are back to the tie. After a good chunk of time comes off the clock,
Xaneya Thomas (Binghamton, NY, Binghamton) makes a go-ahead jumper. She answered back on the next possession with a layup. That's four points in less than one minute for Thomas. After a made free-throw, Trinh went in for a layup, and made it. The quarter ends on a Panther layup, the Mavs end the third leading 46-43.
Bradford started off the scoring in the fourth quarter, but it was answered by Blenman who made a jumper in the paint. Hardick added another to give them a five point lead. There was a Panther three that was answered by another Trinh three and a good jumper from Veal. At 4:46 the Panthers put another three on the board, and just minutes later, another one. They were only trailing by one. At three minutes, they made a free-throw, then hit a layup. The Panthers took the lead again. Just under two minutes they strike again and boost their lead to four points. Veal breaks the streak with a free-throw after a foul in an attempted fast-break. The Panthers kept up the pressure and the Mavs couldn't get it back. The Mavs drop this matchup 59-63.
Game leaders for the Mavericks were Hardick with 21 points going 7-18 with one three, five rebounds, three assists, and three steals, Veal with 13 points going 6-11 with two rebounds, four assists, four steals, and one block, and Garrett with four points going 2-7 with eight rebounds.
The Mavericks will play in their Senior Game next on Saturday February 12. They will face Pitt-Greensburg for a start time of 1:00 p.m. The Senior Day Ceremony will take place before tip-off.
