AMHERST, N.Y. – The Medaille College men's volleyball team dropped their match 3-0 against the Daemen College Wildcats. The Mavericks lost 9-25, 15-25, and 9-25 in all three sets.
The Wildcats gained the first points of the match with a kill. The Mavericks earned their first point off of a service error. The Wildcats kept up their lead while
Matt Dickerson (Lockport, NY, Starpoint) put the first kill on the board for the Mavs. Daemen started on their own scoring streak and made it all the way to 13 points, while the Mavs still only had three. It would end on another Wildcat service error.
Tyler Hassell (Angola, NY, Lake Shore) brought the Mavs to six points with a kill. The Wildcats were still on a roll and were not giving the Mavs a chance to come back. They took the set 25-9.
In the second set, the Mavs got the first two points off of a service error and a kill from
Malachi Jackson (Cheektowaga, NY, Cheektowaga). The Wildcats quickly caught up on a kill and a service ace, then found themselves leading again after a bad set from the Mavericks. They were briefly tied up at 4-4, but the Wildcats took off with the lead again. The Mavs were keeping this one close. Dickerson had another kill to put the score to 10-14, but the Wildcats scored another quick three points to boost their lead.
Brandon Smith (Lancaster, NY, Lancaster) grabbed a kill and the Wildcats made an attack error to give the Mavericks two more points in a row. Daemen was too far ahead still, and took the second set 25-15.
In the final set of the evening after a quick point from both teams, the Wildcats went on another scoring streak. They went on a five-point rally to jump ahead quick. It ended on a service error to give the Mavs their second point of the set. Dickerson and Jackson had back-to-back kills, while Smith added one after. At 6-12, the Wildcats started their massive seven-point rally that would finish it off. The Mavs scored a few more points, but it wasn't enough. The Wildcats took the set 25-9, and the match 3-0.
Game leaders for the Mavericks were Hassell with five kills and one dig, Jackson with four kills one block and one dig, Dickerson with four kills and five digs, and
Kevin Cashdollar (Clarence, NY, Clarence HS) with 17 assists and two digs.
The Mavericks will take a break, and then head to Wells College on Friday, February 11. They will begin at 7:00 p.m.
