ALFRED, N.Y- The women's basketball team had a match-up against Alfred State College that resulted in a win 59-45.
The first quarter started with a three-pointer from
Shyanne Trinh (Dorchester, MA, Stoughton) that was assisted by
Erin Hardick (Buffalo, NY, Sacred Heart). That was then followed by a steal from
Desmonique Veal (Buffalo, NY, City Honors) that was converted into a layup by Hardick. The Pioneers battled with the Mavs but the Mavs wouldn't give in with a layup from
Ariea Garrett (Cleveland, OH, Beaumont) that was assisted by Veal with 4:18 minutes left in the first quarter. With only 28 seconds left
Xaneya Thomas (Binghamton, NY, Binghamton) made a layup from Hardick to put the Mavs down by one point 11-12.
The Mavs started the second quarter strong with a jump shot from Thomas that was assisted by
Morgan Kennedy (Philadelphia, PA, West Catholic Prep). Veal was working hard on defense grabbing two back-to-back steals from the Pioneers. Trinh was able to sink two three-pointers both assisted by Hardick. The team shared the ball extremely well with five played putting up points in the second quarter alone. The Mavs end the first half up by twelve 32-20.
To start the third quarter the Mavs had a slow start with the Pioneers coming within eight points only three minutes into play. Free throws made by Hardick and Veal put the Mavs up by 12. Steals made by Kennedy and Veal took away important scoring opportunities from Alfred. With a jump shot from Thomas the Mavs finish the third quarter up by 15 leaving the score at 47-32.
In the fourth quarter, the Mavs kept their foot on the pedal widening their lead to a game-high 21 points. Hardick was able to complete a three-point play when she got fouled going up strong to the basket. Two steals from
Treanna Blenman (Brooklyn, NY, Greece Odyssey) allowed the Mavs to maintain their lead from the Pioneers. The Mavs finished the game, winning 59-45.
The team had a total of 17 steals throughout the game. Trinh scored 14 points and had two assists and two steals. Hardick 12 points and four steals. Veal had 11 points eight rebounds and five steals. Kennedy and Thomas both were able to put up nine points each for the team.
The Mavs play their last regular-season game away at La Roche University at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 19.
